Title: fan belt
Post by: richard s on 22 February 2008, 21:05
a question for all the people with a 2.0 tall block fitted
i am after a fan belt for my car as the one i got for it is a bit long and is on full adjustment and squeals now and then so i need to know what fan belt i need that is the right size
i cant use the mk3 one as i only have the original alternator and pulleys
cheers

As I'm using the original ribbed belt on my 2E I can't give you a 100% answer, but a few minutes in Halfrauds with the old belt, looking through their belts will probably sort your requirement, the new one will want to be pretty close in size to the old one though (been through this loop a few times myself with odd engine conversions).

Just take your current belt off, go to Halfords and have a scan through for one about 10-20mm shorter. You don't want to go too short because bear in mind - yours will have stretched over the months/years from tension, hence the squeal.

Just take them out the packets and compare sizes against each other - thats all I did for my power steering bodge.

did the halfords thing with the belt and ended up with the one that squeals so went back other week and found one a little bit too small (just wouldnt go over alternator pulley) that was why i asked if anyone knew of a specific belt that fitted but it looks like i am going to have go back to halfords and try all the belts
or does anyone know if fan belts stretch
cheers

What length belts did you get, are you sure you lowered the alternator down to its lowest point?

the first belt i got was a halfords 987a so when i went back i picked what i thought was the next size down and it was longer so went back to comparing length and settled on a 950a but this is too short
only thing i can think of if the halfords ones are numbered by length is that someone has been looking through the belts like i did and ended up swaping packaging

30mm is a lot! Like I said within 10mm is your safest bet.

double check then, the belts all have the numbers printed on them. I think there is one called a 963 or similar, should sort you out.
