Title: Cleaning headlight lenses?!
Post by: tim145tim on 22 February 2008, 11:11
Hi guys...

Ive recently noticed than my mums L reg 8v has much clearer/cleaner healdlamp lenses than my 1996 gti.

The outsides of them are clean, but they look a bit murky...

I opened the bonnet and unclipped the 2 metal clips on the top of the casing...

This didnt seperate the headlamp casing... it seemed like it was sealed well...

So I thought Id ask whats the best way of cleaning the inside of the lenses on here

Before I go about seperating the lamps with a screwdriver and breaking something.

I did this yesterday mate.. You take the grill off, it just unclips, theres two bolts on the top of the lamp and two at the bottom, then its off.
Nest you pop the little clips off and i used a hair dryer to seperate the lenses, you heat up the edges of the glass where the silicone is, for a minute or so then gentley prize them apart with a screwdriver. Give then lenses a good clean then put it back on and reheat with hairdryer tomake sure the silcone is re-sealed nicley!

Jobs done..

Rich

I dont think you use a brush, probably a spray, otherwise you would get brush lines?

Yeah, might be really difficult to spray though due to overspraying the actual lenses...

Im sure you wouldn't be able to see brush lines any way due to the style of the original lamps ... the lense is all patterned and distorted and isn't clear.

As we speak im on the floor with a hair dryer tryin to sperate the lens from one of my old headlamps, so it dont matter if i break it.

Easy with the screw driver too as the glass chips REALLY easily. Stripped all 3 sets I've had, infact I've still got the glass off one of them, so if you break one let me know!!

Don't pain't them black though, looks

If you have to phaff with ordinary lights just smoke the inside of the glass!

Just buy some lense tint spray from Halfrauds or similar, clean the glass, properly clean the glass then clean it again & just spray from the can! The more coats the darker the lense!

Aha, i was right, you do spray them, cheers 88. I think i might do this. Would look better on a darker car.

The inerior unit painted black may not be to your taste but most of the nicest black golfs i see have them and you can buy them already done like this and there called E-codes and cost the earth!

looking cool rich, nice work

Ecode name is actually what the yanks call our standard lights, as they are E coded (european) just thought id throw that one in (have a vw mate over in the states )

they dont have the same headligh units as us or headlight switches either, they go mad for our spec

Post by: eightyeightmph on 22 February 2008, 18:40
E-Code just means european light dude, just the yanks name for them!!

Someone (on vortex I think?!) smoked the headlights, also available 'off the shelf'   & I think the look better than E-Codes. Just my opinion, & no, smoked tint spray doesn't give you 'black glass' for a headlight.

Never seen a set of smoked headlights that dont look totally gash and just like black/dark glass.
E codes are also what people over here call smoked standard lights as they were only released in the states
