Title: MK1 GOLF GTI

Hi I am new

I have always had a keen interest in restoring a MK1 Golf GTI. I am thinking about doing it this summer.  I want to do an engine conversion myself, but the conversion needs to be fairly straight forward and the car will be used on a daily bases so needs to be reliable but also fairly tunable as it needs to be fast to fulfill my need for speed.  Any suggestions on what engine I should use?.  I was thinking of the 1.8 16v from mk2 GTI but some one also suggested the Audi  2.0 tall block engine I am not sure which cars these engines are out of, I need to do a bit of research into this anyhow so any info appreciated

Hi, Toby and welcome to golf gti.
I would look at a 1.8 16v out of a mk2 or a 2ltr 16v
out of a passat. Audi tall block has some clearance problems with the throttle body as the block is taller. Or you could drop in a 2ltr 3A engine out of a Audi 80 as the block height is the same (and looking under the bonnet no one will know its a 2ltr ;D).

I agree with MK1.

I would stick with the bubble blocks (9A, 3A) rather than the tall blocks as these wont give you clearance problems.

Think i might consider go with the GTI 16v seems to be the better option, altho how reliable are these engines as i would use to for work which is 50 mile round trip, i heard they have overheating probs and the heads tend to buckle easily is this correct.  Would probubly want it tweeked too, a friend of a friend has mk2 gti and was rrd at 170 and it seems to be pritty reliable. Any advice on these engines would be great.
