16v.
Only people with 8 valves say differently. Apparently they 'feel' faster.
Feel faster, but aren't.
Grow a set of balls and get a 16v, or a vr6 lump!

got a mk3 8v and 16v...
No comparision...
Completely different to drive..
cmpletely different steering/ gearchange/ engine..
If you just drive around town and the occasional b road just get a 8v... it sounds like a tractor when pushed hard abit tho...
more like a diesel the way it doesnt have much to give over 4000rpm too.
Or if you want it to be quick and do normal driving ondual carriageways and stuff go for a 16v... as its a hell of a lot quicker when you actually get to use it.

Im 19........ I pay 1900 Third party as it is, group 14, think i could afford group 16, exactly.
Case Closed.
Next is a 1.8turbo though. Dont fancy a 16v. Prefer the turbo wwww tish ;)

How are you paying that much?
I had an alf 145 cloverleaf 2.0 16v (same perfromance as gti 16v) ins group 14 when I was 17...
Cost me £800 a year on my own policy....
Ive just turned 21....
For the 8v its £400 a year...
The 16v £550 a year....

at the time it was £720 a year for an 8v when I was 17 going on 18.

I only use shell V-power, and its an 8v, but i stil use loads of petrol too mate. So dont worry. And i would have an 16v or 1.8turbo but your just not undestanding im 19 and this insurance company is the only one that insures me. Times change people.

u tried adrian flux mikester? i went with them when i was 20 and had a 16V (16v :wink:) calibra..
i was paying ova a grand and they quoted me 650 quid,bin with em eva since!
27 now and with 3 years no claims im paying £300 a year tpft on 16V golf gti :smiley:

actually no, i think you will find its only the head that differs (16v dohc instead os sohc 8v), suspension etc is exactly the same

well to drive they are completely different ....
steering completley different ,
gearchange FEELS completely different...
8v sounds harsh
16v sounds powerful...
theres a difference....
also
8v .... 0-60 in 10.3 seconds
16v.... 0-60 in 8.0 seconds
big difference...
Maybe its just mine feels different with the 205/50/ r16 anniversary splits as theyr wider and bigger?

steering rack?
radiator?
suspension?
gearbox?
clutch?
exhaust?
same everything apart form engine your saying?

obviously they will sound different but my 8v daily hack sounds anything but harsh
as for the clutch mech, cant comment on this i think they were different at certain years, sure someone will know...but come on that is just clutching at staws, my 8v has a different engine code to some other 8vs, means naff all...
but yeah the rest of the car is supposed to be more or less the same, even says so in the original GTI catalogue i have in my hand right now...
P.s...i wasnt on about performance figures, the only reason i posted on this waste of time thread was because i just thought a few things needed pointing out

IM 19, got 2 years ncb, 3 points. To insure the 2.0 gti 8v and a mg metro turbo on a joint policy with admiral is £1500

id get a 16v or vr6 over an 8v -depends how much you wanna pay for insurance .if you start with a bigger engine its better,cos the insurance goes down a lot more i found anyways

i know matey, iv driven both so i know what your saying, they do feel different, very different, i was just making a valid point, im not trying to say they feel the same to drive...
i only got 8v as its my second car, but tbh i think the 8v will be replaced with a 20vt at some point, unless i get a evo that is....

i was merly curious to other peoples opinions on 8v n 16v
i havnt driven an 8v volks,but driven 8v n 16v vauxhalls n found that 8vs pull better bottom end and 16vs betta top end,n 16vs just feel more solid n reliable,
jst my opinion!lol! :wink:

The 8V doesnt do it in 10.3 seconds, it does it in 9.8 seconds :wink:

I wanted to get a 16V but my insurance is 900 now and im 23. Fully Comp tho.
The reason it's that much tho is because ive only being driving since july. I previously drove a renault clio 1.4rt that was insured with tesco. When i bought my GTI they said they wouldn't insure me on it due to the fact i'd been driving under a year.

same brakes? yes...280mm front discs on both till 95 and then 288mm
steering rack? yes..both have the varible weighted rack
radiator? ...some do and some dont...mix and match at vw again
suspension? ...same on both
gearbox? ...different box and ratio's..16v has lower mid gears
clutch? ...hydraulic for 16v and cable clutch on 8v
exhaust? ...larger bore on the 16v
i believe the 8v is better for crusing as you dont need to rev the engine as hard and the 16v much better for performance... the 0-60 times show that
Oh i drove both and prefered the 8v and it's lazy engine... Before i bought this one i had another 8v and i test drove a 16v for a week!! and i still prefer the 8v.
and finally the mk4 2.0 8v does 0-60 in 10.3seconds and is the slowest golf gti built!!

has any one put a 16v head on a 8v lump ? what i mean is whit the gear box ratios what power gains would you get ?
would it be a one of car to drive ?

The real bonus with a 16v is that it can be tuned easily up to around 175bhp, which is Vr6 power in a lighter car. Whereas an 8v will only get up to say 140bhp by the same methods.
Therefore no contest! And who wants to drive a Gti lazily? :rolleyes:
