Title: Clutch pedal - BROKE!
Post by: Gt-tdi on 03 April 2004, 12:29
i went to park my car the other day, pressed the clutch and WHAM! my foot almost went into the engine bay!!! the pedal came loose and i have no clutch power at all. It happend infront of my friends house (am mechanic) and i am thankfull for that BUT is this a common prob? He says its got to do with the gearbox connection i.e. pricey stuff.

well the clutch on my vw and according to my haynes manual is hydraulic, so master and slave cylinders as opposed to a cable.

when you press your foot down and there is no resistance, there is either a leak in the system or there is a problem with the friction plates and return springs.

i don't really know what your friend was eluding too?

have a nice day

Is this common with the PD engines due to the torque levels??

i suppose its possible, diesels have much lower gearing than petrols so the clutch will see more torque. Having said that I think the diesel clutch is slightly bigger than a petrol?

Probably nothing to do with the clutch mechanical setup, far more likely to be a problem with the hydraulic system.
Try bleeding the system, if no air comes out , then remove the slave cylinder and make sure the rod is under spring pressure.

This just happened on my mk3 16v (hydraulic clutch) - pedal dropped and wouldnt return.

Turns out theres a cap behind the clutch pedal thats spot welded on in 5 places. This had come off so am now gettin in welded back on and jobs a good un
