Title: How good are these MK2s really
Post by: JezGTI on 03 April 2004, 12:07
Just wonderin', how long do/can the mk2 GTIs golf go on for, and does the 8v have any better longevity than the 16v, or vice versa.

I have an 8v with 142000, still runs superb.

it wasnt a gti, it was a 1.3 (a reg) but that had 229000 on the clock and i really gave up looking after it for the last 6 months of its life, i didnt even use to lock it! it died cos of a blocked oil pick up so the engine was starved of oil, if i had bothered to change the oil it would prob still be going now, 2.5yrs later! so cahnge your oil peeps!  ;D

I think the answer to your question is as long as your prepared to look after the car.

As long as you service it, when things start to go wrong you sort them out straight away and don't leave them to get worse. Then you should have a golf that lasts for years.

The mistake people make is they buy a VW and expect not to have to spend money on looking after it, Its a mass produced item and as such parts will fail from wear and tear.

The thing with a VW is that they take more abuse than most of the other run of the mill cars and people neglect them, but when they do go wrong it can be expensive.

Look after your car and it will look after you.  ;)

A car is as good as the wear it has received.

If you drive like a saint, regulary serviced, and replace broken components immediately, it'll go on for years without big problems.

But if you thrash it. If you are intimately aware of the rev limiter, if you wait for the paycheck before repair x in the engine bay, then these all take their toll on the car.

And its not a Mk2 problem as much as its a general car problem.

lol ... I suppose one day good mkII GTI's will be in similar numbers to mkI's - surely we're not an endangered species yet ?

I must say the 'classic' 80's' hot hatches are becoming less and less common now - how many R5GGT or 205 GTI's you see or MKII Astra GTE's etc ... a dying breed - just lucky we chose the VW badge or we'd be drivin sheds too !
