Title: brake questions
Post by: Mikester on 19 February 2008, 23:00
My brakes are begginning to sqweek when i brake like resonably hard, with the combination of no abs they skid at like 10mph to 0 if i really want to stop when i before they wouldnt skid.

When brakes are going do they lock up easier.

The bills for my car just seem to mount up.

Brakes, suspension, exhaust, tax and mot in april! DOH! I hate my gti

check the pads...its a simple wheel off and look job and could save you needing new discs if the pads are worn out..but if its not metal on metal squeeling and the pads are fine i wouldnt worry...... oh and my abs has being tested 100% ok but it still will lock when pressing hard especially with this weeks weather...

My brakes on my 16v used to squeel alot when braking, i'd say change the pads at the very least, noise only dissappeared when new discs and pads were fitted by Midland vw.

So stick some new discs and pads on the front and it should be better? Not gettin them down at VW though, stuff that, lol.

Midland vw aren't a vw dealer, more like Stealth racing or Storm developments, reason i had it done there was coz they sorted out my long standing abs problems aswell.

Ah i see, well im pikcin up sensors and head lights thursday from gsf, so hopefully the abs will be fixed, but i cant fit discs and pads myself.

May sound stupid? But how do you tell when pads and discs are shot? Discs more than anything....

cheers.

Well if discs need changing they usually have a lip on  the outer edge and seem quite scorded and ruff, either this or they are warped. Pads wise you can see visually by looking at em, good pads have alot of pad between the disc and the caliper bad ones don't.

Of GSF

60205 - BRAKE DISC-VENTED 288mm B - G3 2.0 GTi 8V AGG Eng. / 2.0 16V ABF Eng. / 1.9 GT TDi AFN Eng. 97>

£27.50 each?

Are they any good?

Or are the bremo ones these ones?

60200F - BRAKE DISC-BREMBO'MAX' - G3 2.0 GTi / 16V >96

£36.50 each?

Are they drilled, or will they fit?

Which pads are obvious, just not sure about the discs.......

I'd say go with the first set and use good pads such a Pagid, Forrodo, ect.

Drilled I've seen advice no to, the undermine the disc and can cause cracks if overheated. As for discs specially, you get what you pay for... I've bought cheap discs from GSF for an E30 BMW and they warped within three months, never again. I'd buy those from VW, or take advice, but I reckon you probably get what you pay for with brakes.

Apologies for not being much help, I'm sure others know more than me, but I'd probably go with VW discs myself, not being a modded fan boy racer
