I have had my Colour Concept since 1999 and i really noticed the heated door mirrors dont work yesterday with -3 degree temp and thick covering of frost!
Does anyone know if there is a seperate fuse for them or is this common on these cars? Do i need to change the mirrors?
-
Pretty common fault, I think the bit that fails is part of the mirror itself so if you replace the lenses you should be ok again.
I only know about this from talking to someone who had the same problem so worth checking before you go & fork out for new parts.
-
remove the mirror and check that the contacts are still connected first
-
Yup as guy said, check connections if that doesnt work you'll need new glass for them!
-
do all gti's have them? if they do mine don't work either... does the glass just pop out?
-
It does but can break, I found if you adjust it as far in towards the car as you can, you can 'leaver' it just enough to get as screwdriver in to unclip the first tab then leaver a little more to the next until it pops off.

just checked mine, passenger one looks melted on the back but drivers one looks fine...is there a seperate fuse for these that may have blown

i found the easiest way to do this was to direct the mirror to the floor then wrap a blunt cutlery knife or similar in a soft cloth and insert that at the top of the mirror - it then just pops out - don't forget to support the mirror as you're doing this...
i wrote a thread ages ago about mirror glass removal and cowling removal and refitting... hold on... here it is...

yeah, they used to work great, couple of minutes with the rear window heater on and the door mirrors would be steaming!
i will check the contacts, maybe give them a clean with some WD40, get the rust off the contacts.
cheers guys!

Mine dont work! well actually I rarely use the rear defroster..... it takes far too much power and my amp's needs all they can get!! (I really need a new bigger battery and bigger alty this year!!)

How do you know if you've got heated mirrors, is there a switch or something?
-
I think there should be a vertical line running through your side mirror glass which im guessing is a heat element.
It comes on when you push the rear screen demister i think.

i don't think it is.. the heater elements are on the back of the mirror... if you have the line i think that denotes that you have the special convex or concave (can't remember which) and that line is the kind of blind spot area...

yeah the heated part is on the rear, loads of lines .... theirs 2 connectors on the back also where it joins the loom
