Title: sub in the boot floor? suggestions/advice
Post by: cняis on 18 February 2008, 16:38
i have an unbranded bandpass sub box with 2 x 10" subs, which causes 2 problems:
1. its a large box and doesnt provide me with much shopping space in the boot.
2. it creates a LOT of bass, i.e. it will give you a headache but its not overly crisp/responsive (drones a bit!) - i think thats the nature of bandpass boxes.

as this is for the project golf, which will see limited milage, i can do away with the spare wheel. i'd like to make a false floor (mdf) in the boot and mount the a sub over the spare wheel well. will this:
a) sound ok?
b) need to be ported?
b) mean that the wheel well needs dynamat (or similar)?

im not after a show winner, and i would like to re-use what I have already. im just looking for value for money.

 :nerd:

With any sort of build like this sound proofing is good idea and you would probably end up having to make a false boot floor to create enough space to fit the sub, I would try and find out how much space the subs you have need to try and get the best sound out of them. I have no idea what it would sound like and I wouldnt worry about porting it as the chances are you wont be able to make the space it'll be in completely air tight.

ok, sounds good. im just after a little punch to back up my 17cm front speakers, as i wont be fitting 6x9s (i'd like to strip the rear out)

go for sealed as box size will be smaller.

sound proofing is a good idea.

sound quality can vary from so many factors so hard to say but should be ok ;)

Agreed. I'd also go for a fibreglass enclosure.

I'd initially thought about going this way and having one of those bottle repair kits instead of the spare. I've now gone against it and started a side panel moulding off. Bl00dy messy, but I'm hoping it'll be worth it. I'm going for a sealed rather than ported box to keep the bass tighter.

I would FG the spare wheel well, then keep going up with the false floor until you have the desired volume.

a lot cheaper solution would be two of these:

under drivers and passenger seat mounted flat

just an idea to save time and money
