Title: correct oil temp?
Post by: GavG60 on 02 April 2004, 10:39
when warm, my 16v goes between 92 and 104 depending on how hard I'm beating her... ;)

is this normal? is 104 too high? if so is there anything you can do to flush / clean the system and oil cooler? is the oil cooler easy to take off and replace?

I've got a Rivage cab on a J plate so it is mk1 shape but it is the same era as the mk2 and in the handbook it says that the MFA displays temps from 50c - 160c, it also says that if the temp is 145c then you should slow the engine speed down so I guess 104c is normal and well within its limit.

As an aside, don't be beating her until the engine temp is 50c, apologies if you already know this  :)

cool, cheers gibby. I usually wait till I'm over 70c just to be safe ;)

No worries, maybe I'm not waiting long enough before I start whipping mine, waiting 5 minutes for it to get to 50c is hard enough ! Vrrrrooommmm :D

when sat at 100+ on the motorway mine was reading 120 one day. I dropped to cruising at 80 until it dropped closer 100c

I think normal operating temp. is 80 but thats with normal driving!

80?????? mine's never under 92 when its warm, even if I'm driving my gran :D

There's not an exact running temp, it's a range, so normal running temp in the handbook will say something like 80c - 120c as normal.

Have seen mine at 110 lots of time, iirc 16v engines have oil jets that spray oil on the under side of the pistons to keep the crowns cooler.

Mine does the same!! usually about 94-110c. But isnt that over boiing point, surely that cant be good?!  :-\

You would think so jk8v and I thought the temp was in fahrenheit at first due to the temps involved, but 94c -110c is well within normal range.

Not over the boiling point of the oil and the cooling system is under pressure so even the coolant can be over 100 deg c and not boil. (thats why you should not take the cap off the cooling system when the engine is hot).

yeah your sensor isnt working/your mfa is shot/ your wire has come loose at sensor or mfa end

yours wont have the 't' piece arrangement, but it will have the one at (the bolt thing) the back, check it is connected, or buy a new one from vag (?10)

Another factor with tempreature is the grade/make of oil you are running. Quantum Silver is very stable at higher tempreatures, than comparative oils.
