Title: MK3 golf GTI 2.0 8V with running trouble :(
Post by: Sgt Apone on 17 February 2008, 18:51
Its giving me headache and i just want some clues to what it is before i take it too the garage.  Normally when i first run it from cold i suffer from a great loose of power, stutters and if i drop the clutch and rev for 30secs it will either cure it or just make it run better till it clears. dosnt happen every time i start the car either which is weird.  The engine does seem too have leaked a tiny bit of oil but this morning i looked and nothing, its like its playing with me. it does burn oil but not major amounts and when it runs right it runs 100% right. only other thing to add to this is where the belts are on the engine, seems to sound different, you know drive you care forever and you just seem to notice when theres a noise you've not heard before.
Is all this linked or could it be separate problems?? cheers ppl

EDIT: Erm on a side note, is there ECU in M reg GTi's and if so where the hell is it lol

try a new temp sensor for your cold running issues..and take the plastic cover where your wipers are off and the ecu is behind the passenger side wiper

temp sensors are about £12 for an intermotor one or £18 for bosch

i have exactly the same trouble, hard starting from cold stuttery power and not instant power when i accelerate.

Someone did mention about the temp sensor but i thought this is to do with the fan for cooling..?

where is the temp sensor located is it the one that sits in the water housing on the right of the engine and has a 90deg angle pipe and sensor sits right here???
many thanks
dan

my guide...it's an 8v but the 16v has the temp sensor in a similar place

just went to euro and bought temp sensor cost £11 he looked at mine and said i have the wrong one in there anyway as it has a blue ring round it. he sold me a yellow ringed one and said this is the correct sensor so fingers crossed no more abusing the starter motor.
will keep you posted tommorow morning.

I've sold loads of these and i have all ways sold whats all ready fitted..blue or yellow or green and theres a red too! mind euro have better listings than me!
oh yeah blues defo most common! and they seem to get refferd to as the "blue temp sensor" and thats what people ask for, so i'm guessing thats why yours had one??

as said before i fitted the temp sensor, didnt make any difference starting, still took about 5 mins of cranking and miss firing till she cam on. next thing is the coil i am going to change see if its this, because it always seems to be in the morning, once shes running i have no problems till the next morning...
any ideas..?

well i see my problem is common, i havent got round 2 the sensor yet but i was driving yesterday had trouble 2 start then kind of cleared. anyway stopped for 5mins after driving for 30mins. Started again on journey back home, down linked road doing erm 60, honest, and it was acting like it was having trouble with getting fuel through. only way i can explain it. also today in town, engine was warm, fairly warm, and lost power big time, like put clutch in throttle right down and it took good 10secs before the revs picked up and before they did something in my engine bay went pop!!
Oh my engine is the 8V but its not the same as the one pictured, well most of it but where the throttle cable is in that pic i have some sort of device there  :undecided: and i dont have that great big air box, i got a K&N filter there.  Oh and 1 of the blokes in my local motor world said it could be one of my injectors?? as is seems sounds like fuel not getting through and when i put my foot down it struggles. i will find my heynes manual tonight and look for all these bits, see if i can clean em maybe.

try the relays..fuel pump and ecu both common faults and a cheap fix. dont believe the motor joke man as the mk3 injection system is quite reliable...

i changed the ecu relay & temp sensor and still no start from real cold mornings, it smells rich in fuel as i had the door open and the wind blowing it my way, when i turn it over it turns n turn then quick misfire then turns n turns then quick misfire then turn and when i stop turning the key the engine pops through my intake pipe... when its a warm morning with no frost she starts fine. but also when im driving it during the day if i all of a sudden slam my foot down to tear off the response is rubbish it stutters like theres a fuel or spark issue for couple of secs then bang shes off picking up the speed... going to get some new plugs now see if it make a difference may get a new coil as well.

Basic fault finding

1 Check enough fuel is getting through to injectors - break the line and physically check - and fuel is   getting to the engine in the correct ratio - injectors
2 Check engine is getting correct air mix ratio
3 Check ignition system

You seem to be confusing all 3. Work methodically and eradicate all issues associated with each point above before moving on to the next. Your problems sound fuel related to me.
