Can anyone suggest how to deal with this. Recently very smokey from exhaust even when not flooring it. A blast down the motorway used to help clear things out but this is now all the time. Any sort of tap on the throttle and I get a puff of smoke which is shown up clearly in light from cars behind at nights and also visible day time. Ive tried different garages for diesel to no avail. Clean car but dirty exhaust most annoying. Help and input would be greatly appreciated.

first thing id check would be to see if your air filter is dirty or blocked up with crap coz if so it will make the car run rich and your get smoke out the exhaust.

after checking the air filter i'd check all the vacuum hoses as you could have a leak somewhere causing the mixture to run too neat eg not enough air getting in

I had a similar problem with a BX Gti and it turned out it was the valve stem seals. I have absolutely no idea what they are though!

basically its the hoses that run from the turbo to the intercooler and back from the intercooler
if one of these goes then air escapes from the turbo and it can't get enough air into the mix resulting in a nice white/blueish white smoke.
if you've got a jack then you can inspect them yourself
