I heard it today whining all the time and the car wasnt running very well is this normall or do i need a new pump.Ive heard that if the lift pump go's it can put extra strain on the main pump

it may be your in tank pump is shafted this will make the main pump work harder and could cause it to be noisey
-
Is there anyway of testing this
-
You can unplug the electrical connector to your main fuel pump, turn on the ignition, and you should hear the lift pump prime apparently. They are dead cheap to replace by the way and easy to access via the access panel under the boot carpet.

I cant hear it primeing but if i unplug it would make a diffrence to the running because it doesnt
-
not at first no, eventually the main pump will get weaker and die.

How loud is the lift pump when it primes? I have a the same problem so have done as you suggested and can't hear it when sat in the car. Do you need to have your head in the boot to hear it or is mine knackered? cheers

its pretty quiet, best way to hear it is to disconnect the plug for the main pump and turn the key 1 click, you'll hear it then :) You could put your eart up to the round metal flap in the boot too, but it can still be prety hard to hear i over the noise of the main pump.

Ah, yeah I did disconnect the main pump but still couldn't hear anything. Guess I need to replace the lift pump then

Dont sweat the big stuff... Only £20 or so ye olde english pound sterling for a lift pump the last time I checked.

£26 inc vat from gsf so not too bad :)
