hi,
i have had a small oil leak from the top half of my engine for a while, and i have been told that its just a gasket that i need and its easy enough to do
but after thrashing my car last nite chasing after my friends h reg fiesta xr2 i woke up thismornin to find some oil has leaked onto my driveway wich it has never done before, i looked underneath the car at the oil sum and it seems to be running down from the side of my engine and dripping off the side of the oil sump.
i am going to have this leak fixed properly in a couple of weeks when i get payed but i need a quick fix for now, is there anyhting i can put in it to temporarily fix it,
i have heard of putting something (not sure wot its called) into ur radiator to temporarily fix leaks and wondered if theres somthing similar for an oil leak?
any help apreciated
thanks
-
nothing is a quick fix. the only possible thing is either keep the oil topped up and dont thrash it or just dont drive it till you get it fixed.
-
im guessing that when i thrash it it makes the oil hotter and thinner wich is why it has leaked so much after last nite??
before last nite it was leaking but it was only slightly and it never dripped on the floor, im hoping that it will now return to just a minor leak that never drips as long as i dont thrash it

theres something called engine stop leak..made by ads??
that makes your seals swell a bit...allthough i dont know how good it will be for your breathers??
-
putting things in your rad wont stop a oil leek, check the oil sensor on the side of the engine block (right hand side on the flat bit) these leak ofern and are a cheep easy fix,
-
dont bodge just fix it
-
Yeh engine stop leak works, but only with rubber seals. Is mainly marketed for the A-series engine where the transmission rubber oil ring permanently leaks. I would just clean all the oil off with some brake cleaner, fire it up and have a good look with a light, if its something like the rocker cover gasket then thats very cheap and easy to fit.
-
im just thining about topping up the oil as im about to go out,
i have some shell helix 5w-30, is it ok to use this oil and also does it matter if the oil in the car is different to wot i start topping up with???
thanks
-
Have you just got a perrished rocker cover gasker? they are only £4/5 change it!!
-
I was gonna say rocker cover gasket, few quid and really easy to change
-
its basically leaking from wot i would call "the lid" of the engine , i mean the top half wich has the oil filler cap on it
sorry for my not so mechanical lingo
-
yup, that whole lid if you like is the rocker cover. Unbolt that and you'll see a rubber seal going all the way around the outside of it to seal it closed and across around the spark plug ports to stop oil leaking out into the plugs too. New gasket is probably a fiver

Not being rude mate but please fix this properly as someone who rides motorbikes on the road cars leaking oil are a serious danger and to do so when you know its leaking is irresponsible. If i crashed on oil from your car id be pretty pissed off.
This has happened to me before on a diesel spill and its a pain in the arse so fix it properly and dont endanger peoples lives
-
yea i completly understand wot ur saying,
the car isnt leaking at the moment only if i really really thrash it wich i dont, im getting it fixed on saturday,
so the seal is about a 5iver, how much should i pay to get it fitted, i dont wanna be ripped off
thanks

im just trying to find thid rocker cover gasket/seal but i need to know wot the official name of the part is,
i have found a valve cover gasket, is that it???
-
Cam cover gasket, rocker cover gasket, valve cover gasket... all the same thing mate so that's the one
-
ok so i have fixed my oil leak, went to local parts shops and bought a new rocker cover gasket for £6 and i fitted it myself was easy,
the old one had turned really brittle and moldy,
so no more oil leak thanks everyone for your help,
next on the list,
sunroof drains - got the prts (tubes) already
dor lock mechanism
temp sensor -got this part already aswell, just waiting to pik it up from my friend
-
You'll lose some coolant changing the temp sensor so make sure you have some to top up with mate
-
ok i wasnt aware of that but thanks for lettingme know,
i thought i just take it out and clip in a new one
-
good excuse to buy a premixed 5l bottle from halfords, drain all the coolant from the bottom rad hose, change the sensor then refill completely with fresh coolant ;)
