Title: Digifant Tuning
Post by: russ-vdub on 16 February 2008, 18:33
So went to tune up my 8v from Rubjonnys guide. After getting the engine up to temp, removed the pipe from the flying saucer, plugged the intake hole, then started the car. Revved to 3grand and oil literally started spewing out from rocket cover gasket all down the front of the head. So I plugged the pipe back on to the intake and it was fine. Tried again and same thing, can't go any further cos i'll loose all my oil and im sure this isnt right.

I must be doing something wrong but im sure thats the way to set the CO2 levels up from rubjonnys guide.

Any thoughts i'd be grateful, cheers

Russ

It sounds as if you have a case of crankcase compression. Do it again and remove the dipstick. If you have a howling gale from the dipstick hole, then you may have a piston or piston rings issue. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but what you have described does not sound good.

Head rebuild time... Sorry dude! Oil seals/Stems!

Crankcase compression? More than the head I'm afraid.

You could try giving it a dry and then wet compression test to give you some idea.

Where was the oil coming from exactly? If you had this amount of oil going into the PCV valve then surely you would have noticed by now in the form of plumes of blue smoke flying out of your exhaust.

which side did tyou plug up, the side to the inlet manifold or the PCV itself?

i plugged the inlet side, the actual hole in the metal

odd!  try taking the PCV off completly, perhaps its buggered inside and only opens when vacuum from the inlet sucks at it?

yeah thats the one.  It just pushes into the rocker cover.  might be the mesh grill under it is partially blocked?  I'd try piulling the pcv off 1st, if that dont help take the rocker cover off and give it a good clean, mthen refit with a new rubber gasket (replace the studs too if it had a cork one on there before)

ok thanks i'll give that a go when i get the chance. i'll give the the mesh a good clean aswel while im at it.

one other thing i was wondering about was the oil pressure buzzer. after this mishap with the oil spilling everywhere, the next day i was on my way to college and after bout 30minutes the buzzer went off. i pulled up asap, checked all connections and looked for oil leaks, turned the car on and no buzzer. the buzzer hasnt come on since. i was just wondering if it could have been a loose connection or related to oil spilling out from the rocker cover?

nah should be ok if you switched it off straight after the buzzer, and it didnt come back.  could be a sensor fault too, sometimes the blow inside, you know they're gone if you find the rubber boot is full of oil!

oh ok i did have a feeling that it was a connection problem because it had come on before very breifly then havent heard a peep since. can i ask which boot your talking about? feel like a right tard talkin to people with such knowledge but then if you dnt ask then you'll never know lol.

check the boots on the pressure senders, if they're full of oil they are fubar'd.

pressure senders? sorry but i am a real newb to all this oil pressure malarky, gimme and engine to swap no probs but technical engine stuff im still learning..sorry again for my ignorance

The pressure senders are what tells the dash buzzer it should go off. One is on the oil filter housing, the other is on the side of de head, great big sensor, one is white the other is black, brown or blue.  They'll have a big black rubber cap over the wire, the wire for the one on the oil filter houisng is yellow, side o head is blue.

ahh cheers yeh the blue one on the side of the head was a bit iffy when i checked the connections after the buzzer went off. so this could be all a scare for a connection reason, phew, i'll still get the compression checked anyways
