Title: Just got a GT170 TDI courtesy car
Post by: keyser on 14 February 2008, 22:19
Dropped my car off at the dealers last night to have some work done today to fix the coolant pipe.  Was given a Polo 1.2 (a real weapon ). They rung today to say the wrong part was ordered and they would have to keep it in another day.  I couldn't do any longer with the Polo so they told me they would give me something else. Picked up a GT TDI 170 this evening.  (Fair play to the dealer who has been pretty decent about things)

First impressions are that the interior is nowhere near as nice as the GTI.  No dual control climate and the manual gearbox not the sports gearbox in the GTI. The seats are not as comfortable. Power wise it is not as quick as the GTI. It is not, end of. Forget the diesel heads who say it is and who drone on about torque. There is a lot of torque in the GTI. Don't get me wrong, it is still quick with plenty of shove.  Handling is not as good with corners not being taken in the same fashion I am used to

It not as desirable either.  I was driving behind a candy white ED30 on my way home and was very envious. The TDI just doesn't have the same road presence. MPG was't much better than my GTI.  The trip was sitting at an average 39mpg. Overall, it is is good car and quick but bottom line would be only get one if you are doing big mileage, otherwise get a GTI.

I considered one of these before ordering the Ed30 so nice to have my thoughts confirmed but maybe a bit harsh? I though it was a good motor but a different style?

Yeah, its a little harsh.

The GT TDI isnt desgined to be in same league as the GTI. ITs just a quick desiel with a few sporty touches.

They have not really made a diesel counter part in the mk5 range yet. In mk4 they have and there great.
