Title: after a remap.
Post by: stevieC on 14 February 2008, 13:28
Just wondering do most of you inform your insurance company after getting a remap.

Yeah I did, always best I think. I just faxed the Superchips graphs over to my insurance company and they just said fine, and that was it. No extra premium. Although I do have insurance through the company so might affect it.

....Most definitely!!!!

You could be in very deep sh!t if you don't. Imagine a scenario where you are involved in a road traffic incident in which someone is killed. It may be clear that it's not your fault but your car may be impounded and a full investigation held. If you are found to have an undeclared remap your insurance could be totally null and void. It could cost you far more than any saving on insurance premiums.

Got the insurance sorted before I've even had any trials for the remap, only added £78 to the policy for the whole year. This also included adding a performance air filter and unlimited cosmetic mods if I so required them.

I'd be interested to learn which insurance companies have been "remap friendly" and what the increase in premium was

Most I've tried to get quotes from don't seem to like any remap that adds more than 25% power.

and most ED 30 remaps take it to 300bhp or more ?  which is about + 30% on VW's 230bhp.

or can you declare the rolling road figures, before and after, which would bring it down to around  + 22%  if the before figures are 244bhp as many have achieved ?

....There are many factors in calculating your individual insurance risk. History, experience, and age, being major ones. Also location.

Declared also.

I'm old and decrepid and with no claims or points on my licence they love me

Having said that they are bumping up my insurance again when the CF goes on

....Isn't it funny how us 'oldies' are the ones who are most modding our Mk5's . It's not as if everyone else are impoverished students. But the American boys put us to shame though many are without much taste in my opinion.

My insurer hasn't charged extra for any of my carbon eye-candy - Not even for my bonnet!!

Greenlight Insurance were one of the best for me

http://www.greenlightinsurance.com/

was around £600 for a Bluefin Superchip (on ED30) for me and the Mrs. but they would'nt insure us for occasional business use for our employers

You "oldies" are the only ones (with exception) that can afford the MK5.

To quote a famous man "The MK5 is and old mans car" :D
