After reading the forums it seems there are two main choices for engine remapping:
Revo or Custom Code
Which would you go (or have you gone) for?
What were the reasons?
CS
-
Custom Code; had it done about a month ago; smooth from 2K all the way through with no real let up
-
Custom code for me too.
i read it gave the best throughout the rev range. Though as mine is a N/A it appears to give the most benefit on bottom end torque.
-
I got mine remapped today by Jabbasport, very impressed :)
-
custom code is the way to go. pulls all the way though the rev range. my mate has revo and it has a big boost mid range and that is it.
-
custom code is wicked, although i think i'm getting used to it now...getting the urge for more pace already, is that normal?
-
ive got custom code, gives a good all round improvement been happy with it for quite a few months now but also getting that urge for something more........
-
No complaints from my Jabbasport!! Been on my car for just under 3 yrs now.
-
i had a revo remap done a few months ago. car drives like a train, meant to kick out 212bhp but not had it in thr RR doing that sat. feels good but still need more!!!
-
Custom code for me too.
i read it gave the best throughout the rev range. Though as mine is a N/A it appears to give the most benefit on bottom end torque.
Would you say it was worth it for the mk4 2.0ltr 8v?
Im considering doing it but will it void my warrantyas i have only just got the car from main dealer?

what kind of warranty have you got as all MKIV's are out of their standard factory warranty
-
Ive got a 3 month warranty on the car from when i brought it the other week from main dealer in derby .
Its going back next week though as there is a bit of a cold start issue
Ahh well might as well use the warranty while ive got it

if you've only got 3 months left then wait for the map; use and abuse in the meantime
In all honesty i wouldn't recommend a remap for the 2.0 but thats my opinion; you just don't get great gains compared to turbo models; you may get a smoother torque curve though which will help for overtaking etc :undecided:
if i had the 2.0 i'd put the money towards making the car handle better; power is nothing without control
-
So what are the differences between the two remappings?
On a 1.8T 150, what kind of bhp and torque increase can one expect?

Will an engine remap have any effect on engine life?
CS
-
I had a generic stage one done on my ECU, will be going for a custom code stage 2 soon.
Not sure what mine is like to other golfs but the turbo kicks in about 2,500rpm and then around 3,500 I get another bit of boost?
-
I got my 1.8T 1999 mapped @ chipped uk in bromsgrove £285 and 20 mins later i was up to 197bhp but diddnt reallyfeel benifit till i had ran it in for 150 miles at least ..... now it seems its getting quicker and more aggressive by the day

A little maybe but the 1.8T is bombproof and can handle big BHP with no probs at all.

pretty much the same as long as you maintain the service intervals and use the correct spec of oil; very crucial as the 150 and 130 can and have been prone to premature cam wear.
ideally you do time and distance oil changes and use longlife oil - apparently its better for remapped cars

apologies for not replying sooner.
imo it was worth it. Low end torque is greatly improved (nothing compared to turbo models though, but thats a different ball game)
If your after driveability as a pose to outright BHP then go for it.
It also cured my cold starting problem.

Where did you get yours done.
I rang a bloke up from custom code and he said that i would need to go to chesterfield to have it chipped.

with the right exhaust and induction kit custom code say u can get 140 bhp outta the 2.0L: this is from there site.
Home VW Golf / Bora 2.0L 8V 115 BHP
2.0L 8V 115 BHP
IMPROVED THROTTLE RESPONSE AND DRIVABILITY.
CUSTOM-CODE IS THE OBVIOUS CHOICE FOR NORMALLY ASPIRATED PERFORMANCE SOFTWARE, ELIMINATING FLATSPOT'S GIVING AN IMPROVED THROTTLE RESPONSE AND DRIVABILITY
Custom Code Options:
Power
Stock
Phase One
Phase Two
BHP
115
125-130
130-140
Torque ft/lb
125
130-135

All of the above is correct.
Ring them again and ask about the mobile unit. they came to my place of work to do mine.
As for the phase 2 - have you seen the price

Yeah sounds good that mate  But dont forget your insurance will go up with a remap put that to the cost of the remap- thats a fair bit of money.
Like you say tho mat if you a keeping the car then why not
-
Yes, that custom code does seem expensive.
It's weird that chipped-uk do all the GTi's (& TDi's), bar the 2.0 8v?!
-
Hi!
Have you called Jayson at chippeduk? I know he is a expert with the Bosch management systems. I think he can also do the Siemens ECU in the 2.0 8v. He uses the same Optican tool as we do which excludes the 2.0 8v ecus. The ecu can be emulated direct to PCB, then once the remap file is produced it can be written direct to the eeprom. I know other companies have tools which will do the 2.0 8v via OBD.
I spent hours on my sister inlaws GTI Cab 2.0 8v and could not push any more than 10bhp 12NM max. The power alone was not really noticable but applied with the rest of the setting in the remap the car feltl much sharper and smoother.
We dont do the 2.0 8v remaps as it take too long to do for so little power gains. Custom Code will have a stock of generic remap files which will suite all of the hardware and software version out there for the 2.0 8v. If Custom Code have spent a lot of time on R&D whith there files then the price will reflect this.
Nick
EDIT:
In Fact just to ad to this. There is an option for a mk4 2.0. 8v with a Bosch ME7 ecu which is much the same as the ME7.5 in the 1.8t, but I have only ever come across siemen ecus
-
The bloke said that they are doing a promotion and will remap it the 2.0ltr for 287 quid.
Sounds pretty resonable to me.
He said that i will see a 10% increase in torque and bhp.
Think that was stage one though
-
Hi!
£287 aint a too bad price for a Custom Code remap. 10% sounds like good power gains.
Keep us updated.

-
with the remapping though please explain what exactly it does and what i get out o it
sorry girl with new golf = need to learn lol

you should probably have a good read of this http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=40194.0
