Reading in the forums it seems that vag com is the software you need to basically check all apspects of the car.
What's the difference between the official vag com and then the £4.99 ones on ebay :

You will have to double check or wait for someone to confirm, but I think you can do more with the office ones and the ebay ones are just limited versions.
-
the official lead contains the licence for vag com, the cheap ones don't so you have to find away around the licence or use the "free" functions

I don't mind paying for anything if i use it - just don't want to pay more than i need to. I'll look into the official licence cost of vag com - Might be worth getting it - unless others disagree.

Depends what you want to use it for. Im pretty sure you can view fault codes and clear them with the free function, which is all I would ever use it for.

Hello,
When I asked my local VW garage about VAG com they said not to touch it as it can blow airbags and cause all sorts of problems, and if they know you have used VAG com they wont use their official VW diagnostics software on your car.
They Full of S**T ?
-
Full of sh!t. They dont want you to get it so they can charge you £40 to do it instead. As for saying you can blow airbags, thats like saying "dont buy a car because you could crash it and die".
There is also no way of telling if you as an individual have used it either, complete and utter bollock$. They might be able to see if VAGCOM has been used on the car, but for all they know that was used when you have a problem or during a service or at any other garage.
What a bunch of tossers some dealers are. Gerrrr
Rant over.

i think VAG COM from a supplier here is at least £200 which a rip-off considering the current exchange rate
there was a group buy for VAG COM on another forum a few months back and its highly unlikely it will ever be run again as over 100 people were involved
if you can stretch to the official stuff then get it because you'll soon make your money back in performing diagnositics and you then also offer it to other people for a few beer tokens
i've scanned a few mates cars now and saved them a fortune!! Did one the other week which turned out to be the brake light switch; £7 later and its sorted :afro:

That is a disgrace !

If you just want to read (and clear) fault codes to help diagnose faults you can pick up a fault code reader for about £40
-
Yes you live and learn. Wont take it there again for VAG-COM.

didn't happen to be Capitol in Merthyr was it mate??
-
Yes, shame really because the staff seem OK. I did get a 10% discount card from someone I know but it still works out at over £60. Will be looking to invest in some software myself when I get some spare cash.
-
Well put it this way, my local garage wanted £40 for a dignostics of the car when my engine manegment light came on. Turned out to be my o2 sensors, if I did the work with them, they wouldnt charge me for the diagnostics. So I got that done for free.
Rip off city is VW.

parts guys are pretty good; service staff seem a tad clueless; if you need any further diagnostics give me a shout as i live just round the corner from Capitol and got the full VAG COM :afro:

I've just order a cable from ebay to use with 401
I think i'll get the full vag com though shortly. Is there a way to do a bulk purchase with any one to get it cheaper?
CS
-
There was a bulk buy not that long ago, probs about 10 months ago now but that was with over 100 people, so i doubt it to tbh
-

in a way yes you can; you can monitor boost, air flow etc etc so it gives you an idea of whats happening; you can also graph the results
-
ah i get ya, but for specific bhp figures its rolling road time?

yeah, you can work out your BHP through VAG COM but it requires doing maths and i'm crap at that lol
RR is best for hard BHP and torque figures
