Title: High lift cam? good idea bad idea?
Post by: kerrygti on 12 February 2008, 19:11: hi everyone! i have been wanting to get a high lift cam for my 1996 gti 8v.

I just have a couple of quiestions to ask about it. weather or not its a good idea getting one put in? will it put stress and strain on the engine?

And i have heard there are different types that you can get for the car where it comes into affect low revs or high revs ect ect..

if anyone knows much about this of has one in their car i would appreciate any feedback!!

Post by: Rmachines on 12 February 2008, 22:58: It usualy shifts the power band up the revs, Fast road its generaly what you would use, when you get into Racing and Rally cams you will need remaps etc.. and it will stall unless its ticking over at 1500+ (which is why rally cars idle so high) But yea... a fast road cam will certainly shift the powerband up a bit, doesnt nessasarily add power without other mods but seems like it because you get less to begin with then suddenly hit that power band. With an induction kit and good exhaust system, mabey even porting etc.. you coul see big diffrences!

Post by: boneybradley on 13 February 2008, 08:10: I had a rover (16v k series) with piper 275 cams..... made it much more revy above 3000rpm but flat below that!! with air filter,exhaust,manifold and chip it gave an extra 17bhp from stock!! cams are an expensive way to add power as they really need other mods to work best and what you gain in high revs you loose in the lows

But as he says unless you do a shed load of other work cams on their own wont do much. Needs to be done with headwork (flowing) and bigger valves etc.

just another idea if you do have Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£ to spare you could get a US free flow cylinder head and then get a superchargers :) !! ooo and some cams ........

Post by: G60GTI16V on 13 February 2008, 14:01: see this is what i keep asking myself, i have a lovely mk3 8v with 69 on the clock i want more power because my mk1 if i still had it would piss all over it. I want to go the turbo or supercharged way...
I could sell my car for good money as it is in unmolested genuine all the way and buy a modified mk3 with 270bhp with supercharger OR i could do it myself as i have the space and tools to do such modding.
But dont forget the supercharged mk3 would be a vr6 as i wouldnt buy a 2.0ltr one but these motors have everything done ie suspension brakes interiour exteriour styling. If i charge mine then these will have to be done aslo which is going to cost a packet. Also my car is unmolested low miles so would be a bit stupid to spoil a genuine vag motor hey?

Post by: kells on 13 February 2008, 18:10: i got some HKS cams on my swift gti twin cam...that thing is like bab off a stick, had to have a remap tho as it didnt run right and was very lumpy at low revs

try philip walker motorsport on ebay sells newman high lift cams -i got mine offf him and he's very helpful think i paid 157 quid for it posted
