Been meaning to put these up for ages, so here goes. Such a shame she was a minter before hand! Still can't understand how they wrote her off, doesn't look like much damage was done from the pics.

And the moral is in icy conditions even if you think you're doing a sensible speed, you may well still be going too fast!
-
poor thing.
It'll be a write off cos that to me looks like it'll cost to much to repair with regard to how much the car costs.
The paintwork looks in good condition...
btw - how'd u know its an 8v? did U take a look around the car at the time? cos its not noticable from the pics as to whether its a 8v or 16v.... they both look the same.
-
^ uhh coz it was his car... lol
-
It was mint, took me ages to find it, the insurance company got 2 quotes both in the ?3500 - ?4000 region to repair the car, car was twisted apparently, the drivers door was wedged shut as a result. I only paid ?3200 for it about 5 weeks before hand!
-
erm I didnt know it was his car! :P ::)
?3500-?4000 is about right for a '97 immaculate 8v mk3 with 70,000 miles or under.

Lol, yeah was my car, stuffed it in a ditch on the 6th Jan this year!
BTW if anyone lives near Basildon it's at a salvage yard down there, bit p1ssed off that they took it there as I was going to have loads of stuff off it, like the 4 reasonably new tyres the previous owner had just put on!
-
So what u driving now?
-
lol u aint perceptive today are ya...
his profile says a mk3 valver ;)
-
I saw the error of my ways and tracked down a mint 16v now drive that instead! The only thing I prefer about the 8v was that it had aircon!
-
Ah, overseer you keep getting in there before me! I must be having a slow day!!!
-
having owned both how do find the differences otherwise .. with performance and stuff ?
i've got air-con, think will like it a lot in the summer :)
-
Having owned both there is absolutely no comparison the 16v is far superior. The performance just doesn't compare. I understand that they both use the same suspension setup but I'd have said that the 16v has a bit more grip when cornering, tends to understeer slightly less, but it does feel slightly lighter at the front when you get to 90+mph than the 8v did, not sure why that is, or maybe it's just my imagination.
I also get better fuel consumption with the 16v but that may be that I've slowed down considerably since writing the 8v off. 16v is quieter and has sound deadening under the bonnet that the 8v didn't, but the 8v had a nice little burble when it was sitting at idle that the 16v doesn't.
Both interiors were identical bar the fact that the first was a 5dr with aircon and the 16v is a 3dr without. I looked at loads both times round, wasn't bothere about special editions, or extras just wanted the best condition with most history I could find.
All in all, both great cars, but I'd recommend the 16v over the 8v any day of the week.
I'm dreading the summer, this is the first car I've ever had without aircon, think I'm going to melt, a sunroof just doesn't make up for it!

sorry im at work and trying to setup a new Domain Server ... so im not thinking 100% toward the site/profiles etc...
bleh .. whens 4:30pm??? ... hurry up!

plus theres the traction control at low speeds.. if you're going around a tight corner and have slowed up enough for it to being working (<25 mph) or that and other stuff could possibly be due to the engine's additional weight, think the engine is a fair few pounds more.
i've noticed mine can get -really- light at the front end if i boot it and am harsh changing gear, so much that it feels like the front is gonna lift off.
was lucky i got most extras with mine, not really seen how often they come up that loaded..
afaik only missing climate control and cruise control. people keep saying its odd to have a sunroof and air-con.

Was it you that I was talking to the other day about traction control? I'm not convinced I have it, tried it out over the last couple of days and can light the front tyres up from a standing start without any trouble, doesn't seem to be any reduction in revs when the wheels start to spin.
Know what you mean about feeling it's going to lift off if you push hard through the gears, it'll spin it's wheels in 3rd briefly I've found if you go at it hard enough and will torque steer quite a lot. No such problems in the 8v though!
-
yeah it was me and vr6 and maybe someone else.
they all came with it, so you have it! :P lol
i have lit the tyres up too it cant always handle the wet. , its a lot harder than it was in my old 1.4 polo though..
its best to test it when the roads are a bit slippery... before that.. you might find that if u get it rolling before you plant your foot and then accelerate.. and keep going you'll feel it 'let go' around 25.
if you still aren't convinced i'll try work out an easy way to tell in the dry when i have my car back. :)
i really really noticed it a lot on sunday when i nuked my car coz the roads were wet.
-
Must have it then, it just didn't seem to make any difference, the only time the wheels stopped spinning was when I let off the loud pedal! I'll try planting my foot when the car is rolling next time.
I used to have an Astra Coupe Turbo before the 8v and it had traction control but it was really noticeable the revs would just drop away once the wheels started to spin, plus you got a light that came on to tell you when it was working. Was fun trying to make the light come on when you changed into 4th gear, quite easy to do as well! Guess I got used to that system and the VW is a little less severe so I haven't even noticed it doing it's job!
-
yeah its not exactly the most clever system in the world. :)
the town centre here has some cobbled sections, when its wet it cant cope.
so far i've noticed it most when roads are a bit slimey, or icey.
-
eh?!
......the 16v's have traction control?.....I thought it was only on the VR6?
-
yup.. all 16vs have the same TCS as the vr6.
i'll scan the bit from the brochure in :)
same thing shows the valver being used as a rally car.. and the vento vr6 as a race car..
why not the vr6 as as rally car i'm not sure? maybe because of class regulations.
