Title: Have i just f#cked me engine, PLEASE HELP?!?!?!!

JUST BEEN TO THE ESSEX MEET AND GOT A LITTLE CARRIED AWAY AND THINK I MAY HAVE SEVERLY DAMAGED MY ENGINE ,BALLS

OVER 2500 RPM THERE STARTS A RATHER HORRIBLE CLATTERY RATTLE IN TIME WITH THE REVS. THIS DOES NOT RATTLE WHEN IDLING OR IN LOWER REVS. HAVEN'T TAKEN THE REVS TOO HIGH FOR FEAR OF DAMAGING ENGINE MORE.

HAD A LOOK UNDER THE HOOD AND REV IT A LITTLE. HEARD THE BAD NIOSE AGAIN BUT NOT AS BAD, SO PROBLEM IS WORSE UNDER LOAD.

DID SOUND LIKE IT WAS COMING FROM THE HEAD (BUT I WAS STANDING ABOVE THE ENGINE REVVING IT SO THAT COULD BE WHY).

CAN ANY ONE GIVE ME ANY TIPS ON HOW TO DIAGNOSE WHICH PART OF THE ENGINE COULD BE DAMAGED. OR ANY PROCEEDURES THAT I COULD DO TO START THE FAULT FINDING PROCESS. WOULD PREFER TO START WITH THE HEAD AND WORK DOWN TO THE BOTTOM END IF I HAVE TO GET THAT FAR. WILL TAKE ON ANY PROCEEDURE AS FAR AS STRIPPING THE ENGINE.

REALLY WANT TO BE ABLE TO FIX THIS ENGINE (CLEARLY) SO ANY AND ALL SUGGESTIONS ARE WELCOME.

WILL BE A BIT MORE SENSIBLE NEXT TIME (F#CKIN GOOD FUN THOUGH)

Have you checked the basic's like the oil level? are u or did you get any warning lights etc?
Post the info and i'm sure some one will help.

DONE AN OIL CHANGE YESTERDAY SO KNOW THE OIL IS GOOD

NO WARNING LIGHTS BUT GOT AN OIL PRESSURE GAUGE, DIRECT OIL FEED NOT ELECTRONIC, AND THE PRESSURE IS GOOD.

Did u check for leaks post oil change ????

have you checked the level ???

What oil did you use ???

You say the pressure is good, you sure it doesn't drop off as you rev it?

You changed the oil? with what and what filter?

THE OIL PRESSURE ROSE WITH REVS AS IT USUALLY DOES.

DID NOT REPLACE FILTER AS HAD ONLY CHANGED OIL AND FILTER A MONTH AGO.

REASON FOR YESTERDAYS OIL CHANGE WAS I DROPPED OFF THE SUMP, CLEANED IT AND CLEANED BAFFLE ON PICK UP HOSE.

JUST CHECKED OIL ONCE SETTLED AND IS THE SAME AS IT WAS ONCE CHANGED. THERE INDICATING NO LEAK.

THE OIL FILTER WAS A VAG AND THE OIL IS CARLUBE 10 40 SEMI SYNTHETIC.

NIOSE DOESN'T SOUND TOO MUCH LIKE NON LUCRICATION AND MORE OF A MECHANICAL RATTLE AT HIGHER REVOLTIONS OF THE ENGNINE

Doesn't sound too good really  :sad:

Using a large screwdriver pressed against your ear as a makeshift stethoscope might help you localise the noise or get a better idea of the makeup of the noise.

If it is a head problem there is no easy way to diagnose the extent of the problem without removing the head.

You could compression test which would tell you which cylinder is the problem but its still head off job to investigate. 

Blown a ring or dropped valve?   :undecided:

HAVING A PLAY WITH A mK1 WITH A TT ENGINE IN.

BASICALLY MAXED IT OUT, REDLINED IN 5TH, ETC

take the rocker cover off and have a look to see if anything is amiss.

is it 8 or 16v?

INDEED WAS MUCH FUN, GOT RIPPED BUT WASN'T REALLY EXPECTING ANYTHING ELSE.

THIS IS I RECKON I'M GONNA DO, PLEASE COMMENT.

COMPRESSION TEST THE CYLINDERS TO CHECK VALVES & RINGS, OBVIOUSLY DEAL WITH ANY PROBLEMS AS THEY ARISE.

IF ALL GOOD WILL HAVE THE HEAD OFF, DISMANTLE TO CHECK SHELLS ON CAM'S AND FOR ANY PLAY IN THE CAMS AT ALL AND LOOK TO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS IN PLACE. ONCE AGAIN FIXING ANY PROBLEMS AS THEY COME

IF ALL GOOD THERE THEN I WILL DISMANTLE THE BOTTOM END CHECK AND FIXING AS I GO.

IF I CAN FIX IT THEN I'LL STICK AN ABF 2.0 LITRE BOTTOM END IN.

WHAT YOU RECKON, SOUND LIKE A PLAN.

ALSO AS I AVE TO USE THIS CAR FOR WORK IF I DRIVE ITIN LOW REVS WHEN THE ENGINE SOUNDS COMPLETELY NORMAL CAN I ASSUME THAT I WON'T BE CAUSING TOO MUCH MORE DAMAGE.

Maybe the chain? - can you elaborate a little, i know you mean the Cam chain but how would i recognise if is was damaged, etc.

The cam chains are notorious for developing a rattle on 16v's. It's a kind of metallic rattle that's usually most prominent around 3-4k revs.
This may sound a bit strange but get somebody else to rev the car to the point that the rattle starts and go and stand away from the car/round the corner as it makes it a lot easier to hear the rattle. When my last 16v developed that problem I was outside the garage with a mechanic trying to demonstrate the problem when the manager came out of the office asking why we were torturing the poor thing. The mechanic stood right by the car couldn't hear the rattle at all!!!

Anyhow if that's what it is you'll need a new camchain/tensioner and you might aswell replace all the tappets while the cams are out.

Oh one other thing worth noting is that any kind of cam rattle etc will be at a frequency of half the engine speed, that might help pin it down to top or bottom end.

Have just been out with another golf head from work, Matt - GPES.

Have identified its definately top end, cam rattle, he reckons chain similar to previous thread.

Spot on about the rev range 3-4K fine either side of that. And about being able to listen to it, can't hear direct, but in the car the Oil pressure gauge feeds the niose straight through as its direct feed from the engine.

Matt has got a spare good head from when he ABF'd his valver so going to pop that on and hopefully rocberts your fathers brother!
