Title: New GTI owner, a few questions.
Post by: duffy78 on 11 February 2008, 19:42
Hi all, new to the site, picked my 05 GTI up on saturday, well impressed.

Got a 5 door with dsg gear box and 18 monzas.

Coming from a 51 plate 20v V5 auto and both the performance and gearbox in the gti are on another planet.

Ive got a couple of questions if you don't mind.

Firstly regarding servicing, its on the long life service schedule and it had one this time last year, however the service indicator came on the day after i purchased it, told the dealer this and he said not to worry as it shouldnt require servicing till next year, they said that it was probably reset wrongly at its last service and if i take it in they will reset it again for me, now the car has only done about 9000 miles from the last service, and i assume that the previous lady owner wasnt to harsh with her driving as when the car was on the forecourt it still had original tyres and brakes on it (changed by dealer when i bought it)   does this sound right to you guys? or should i shell out for an oil change to make sure?

I'm considering getting it reset by the dealer and then using the national tyres long life oil deal that is mentioned further down the forum board, or would you recommend letting the dealer carry out an oil change.

money is tight at the mo cause of the car purchase and im not one for fettling with cars myself so any advice would be welcome. (what oil rating is the gti anyway?)

My second question relates to the MFD2 sat nav. my car has the cd version, i was wondering where i could get an updated map disc from? dealer? ebay? how much do these things cost?

Also are there any after market ipod connectors that i can use with the AUx in socket, i dont like the way the official vw one works (6 playlists etc.)

and has anyone hooked up a tv tuner to the aux socket as well?

And last but not least a quick question regarding engine noise, i knew the car had an unusual start up sound, a bit rattly in common with a diesel (this is due to the common rail fuel injection systems used??) but i was kinda hoping for a nice burbling exhaust and engine sound at tickover, maybe ive been spoiled with my V5, which imo had one of the best sounding engine /  exhaust combo's ive ever heard.

I think that this is just my expectations being to high, its been a while since ive owned a four cylinder, prob just forgotten how harsh they can sound, fyi the car sounds great when driven, great induction noise and slight turbo spin noise, love the exhaust blip when changing down using the dsg box.

thanks for any advice given guys.

Congrats on the car, you've made the right decision

Not sure about the long life service as mine is on a normal schedule, I like to keep the oil fresh. If I was buying a car I would expect the car to be fully serviced before I took delivery of it. If its done 9k then it would of been its first service. I would ask them to confirm they serviced it before you picked it up. If they didn't get them to do it. Certainly don't pay for something that should of been done.

SAT NAV - ebay shop: T-Era Best GPS solutions usually has a few of these, try contacting them.

The ipod connection is pants I'm afraid, there are aftermarket solutions like Harman Kardon Drive Play for about £100

Engine noise is normal and yes it is the high pressure fuel system that ticks away nice and loudly. Only solution is to get a full exhaust and induction system which will give you a nice burble on tickover

thanks for the reply,

i had a few requests before i took ownership of the car, including brakes tyres and service, they told me it didnt need servicing as it was on a long life schedule, the service record and the receipt for this prove this, i was just wondering why it was up so early.

ive pretty much made up my mind to get the oil service done, gonna get vw to reset the service indicator and get the oil done elsewhere.

Milltek is the full stainless exhaust they do for our cars, gives a little more noise but sounds nice still.
