Hello, will it be alrite to run the 2ltr 8v engine with the 1.8 mk1 gti gearbox?

yep no problem at all, just make sure you match the clutch kit to the gearbox, not the engine and re-use your old flywheel.

If your car has a 200mm clutch though, I'd advise you upgrtade to a MK2 GTI 210mm clutch kit and flywheel.  You may be able to use the MK3 flywheel thoguh, I'm not 100% sure its the same as a MK1/2 one though...
