Title: Buying advice please?
Post by: dudz on 11 February 2008, 14:09
Hey guys, i just joined the site, and im looking for a little help, im a student and have been saving up for what seems like ages to get a MKIV 1.8 Turbo, ive just sold my little Pug 306 and it brings my total funds up to around £5000

Im looking to spend about £4500 on the MKIV, but ive been searching around places such as pistonheads, ebay, autotrader etc... and most of the cars in my price range have ridiculously high milage, im talking +100,000 miles on the clock. Just wanted to know whether this is normal for a MKIV? my little pug only had 60,000 miles on it and it was an R reg, but some of the golf's ive seen are 2001 reg.

Should i be put off by the high mileage? I dont know too much about VW's but i have heard the engine's on the 1.8 T's are bomb proof, so should i shell out £4500 for a car with 100,000+ miles on or just save my pennies for something else? Also if anyones selling a nice modyfied 1.8T be sure to send me a link  Thanks

Duane

I know of golfs with 100k mileage being fine, but if it was me id be looking for something with less.

There are some about, scout the forums and be patient!

I brought mine with 61000 on. (1.8T). Now has 115000!! Its never let me down only had one engine prob with her!! (A thormostat £17)

So if its been looked after no probs at all. Regular servicing is the key as already said

Keep looking - £4500 should get you something around 80k miles. Perhaps you could go for ones with less fitted extra's??
