arrrggghhhh! my head feels like its gonna explode! ok heres the story, i love gti's always hav done esp wen i was a kid and my brother had a mk2 gti, remember him drving around it and booting it. now 5 years laters about 2 turn 21 ive decided 2 want 1 more than anything, ive had my heart set on a mk2 gti but the old man agures that i souldnt get 1 as they r 15years old and if anything goes wrong its gonna cost a foutune 2 repair and sh!t.
I then decided that i would get a mk3 gti but then theres insurance costs as well as the cost of buying a mk3 as im only an apprence plumber. Plz help i dont know wot 2 do!! i was thinking about getting a mk3 1.6 then doing it up like a gti, how much would it cost 2 buy a mk3 1.6 in good contdion? but then again it jst wont be a gti :'( and the thought of drving a "wolf in sheeps clohthing kills me"
im starting 2 think that i shd wait a few years till i finish my apprenticeship and ive got the money then get a mk4 gti, so wot do u reckon? shd i get a mk3 1.6 as the car would b a lot cheaper than a mk3 gti?? i suppose i could always do it up a bit, wheels, airfilter and stuff so it'd b a poor mans gti but at least id hav a vw!

oh btw anybody know where i can get my own custom made stickers from? i was thinking if i go ahead wiv this mk3 of getting a transpant sticker wiv the writing "born in germany, free'd in England" 2 go on the back window

mk2 gti parts are cheap. and im only 18 8)
i used to play with a mk2 golf GTi car when i was a kid. Turned out to be the same colour mk2 gti i used to play with but now only the real thing ;D

A MKII would be a cheaper option, i think! You should tell them "its my car not yours" and get what you want. As an aside, it doesn't have to be a GTI to be good, i have a 1.3, and its great!! GTIs are just a "bit" better! If you like the MKIII though..... I think they're quite ugly, but am led to believe by a few people on here that they are safer, and more luxurious? Why dont you try both?

some of those anti-old car arguments are a bit dodgy.
new cars cheaper to repair? hmm.. what if ur ecu goes mate.. want a new airbag? ouch...
an old car -could- be more prone to things breaking.. but it depends on whether its been looked after, and whether those things have been replaced before.
like the dude above me said, try a few diff variants out for yourself, see what you fancy.
decide what features you want, and what you can get on your budget, and see what options drops into place.
for custom made stickers look up signwriters in your local area, they will have a laser cutter for vinyl and be able to make you whatever stickers you want.

get a good mk2 while there are still some left,parts are cheap and plentifull you will get little bother from a well maitained one,her indoors`s 8v has done 185k and drives superb just flew through mot last week

if your dad is anything like mine it wont stop after you get the car he wants you to get, my dad is still moaning at my decisions and im 26. ;)
i just hate it when it all goes t*its up and they turn round and say 'told u so' :-\
i reckon buy a GTI, learn from your mistakes and enjoy yourself while your young enough too :D

ive got a plan, gonna hire a garage off the council, get a mk2 gti, wivout the folks knowing, work on it then clean it and polish it till u can eat off it then drive it home and say told ya! :D that way they wont be able 2 do sod all! ;D will they?! ???

Just to agree with what overseer said earlier, just because you get a newer car doesn't mean that it's not going to go wrong. How many people have nightmares with brand spanking new cars ! Even if you get a late mk3 it's still going to be about 6(ish) years old. At your age it probably would make more sense to get a 1.6 and do it up due to insurance etc, but you might not be happy and still strive for the GTi.
I've had my cab for a year now and I'm a lot older than you, I wish I had got one years earlier, so much wasted time driving bangers because I was waiting until "I was older" to get the car that I really wanted. Life's too short, get the car you want and forget about the people who will take the mick, some people will just never understand.

thanks mate ;) the insurnace bit is no probs got got a quote from tesco's 4 a mk2 golf gti 16v and it turns out providing i hav a approved alarm fitted its cheaper 2 insure than my mk5 escort 1.4cvh!!
forget about the people who will take the mick, some people will just never understand.
i know where yr coming from there mate, they jst dont understand do they! oh well they dont know wot there losing out on ;D

Just get a solid mk1 or mk2. Might cost a bit to repair, but will be fun, and cheap to buy.

well if you're getting a good quote for a mk2 valver its all good!
not that i'm biased or anything, but budget allowing.. you could consider a mk3 one too.. they nice ;)

listen mate the mk2 aint getting any younger and with time there wont be any about at all so if its been your dream to own a mk2 gti then get one even if you own for 6 months at least then you have full filled an ambition or childhood ambition.....
if its any concillation i owned a mk3 gti on a m plate it was an 8v..... and yeah it was ok but i sold it and bought a mk2 16v with 123k on the clock and it runs beautifully and has given me hassle free motoring for 50 miles everyday!!!!!!! for the past 2 months of ownership
the reason i did this was becasue i too wanted a mk2 from the start but got the mk3 wasted loads of money on buying it outright when i should of just bought the mk2 from the start.... there faster they look nicer and parts are very cheap for it!!!!!

its a higher insurance group than the mk2 16v though (mk2 16v is group 14, mk3 16v is group 16)

great idea trusty! BUT whos gonna tow u home when the poxy dub breaks down - i wouldnt hide it if i was u. my dads my number one tow guy when im in trouble and failing that i just call dizzie :D ;D

lol... i'll admit my dad towed mine home when i got stuck, he likes my car though.
but i used my breakdown cover to get it from home to the garage.

work out what kind of spec you want and watch autotrader to see what the going rate for what you want is.
i did that for 2 months before i bought my car.

yeh it will stay vw lagos yellow after the spray but if i knew then what i know now i would have paid for a good car rather than the colour :-\

metallic was an option tho ... (wasnt it pearlescent and not metallic?) ... anywayz, I aint seen many metallic mk3's ... SOlid black is nice if washed, polished/waxed often enough.

different documenation calls it different things..
mines pearlescent black or black magic depending where you look.
not sure if metallic black is different, i think it isn't but i'm not sure.
solid black is also called diamond black isnt it? or is that another name for pearlescent ?

Metallic is different to pearlescent i think. ... but i aint sure... metallic is speckled...

trust - it really depends on what sort of condition u want the car to be in. theres a really nice oak green sitting on ronals in cars for sale somewhere but its about 1700 i think. your gonna pay more for one thats been looked after.

When I was looking for my Mk2 GTI last year I was hoping for Oak Green, but they're so hard to find for reasonable money. I looked at a Royal Blue Metallic Mk2, but it wasn't a great car, even though the colour is quite rare.
But in the end I got my Atlas Grey Mk2 16v for ?700, G reg (89 small bumper) with 155k. Took ?250 to get it through an MOT though.
It's in pretty good condition too.
It's back on the road now, so I'm gonna have some fun this weekend.

Well I paid ?600 for mine (140K - 8V) back in Nov last year (piccies see the gallery). Spent ?200 on it since on bits and bobs (cam belt, service, front engine mount etc) and its running sweet now. Just need to tittivate her up a bit for summer and I am all good.
Love the car and wish I had had one years ago !!
Best giggle factor I have had for a long long time and still enjoy getting behind the wheel months after purchase.
Go for it, I promise you, you will not be dissapointed... !!

mmmmn saw a lovely mk2 gti, black 88,000miles bbs, j reg 3 door, jst had a respray, mint inteior, full history 3 owners, 11months MOT 5 months tax....?2,100 :D jst a shame its a bit out of my price range :'(

Im 21 and for a mk3 gti I pay ?550 fully comp and thats with my fella added onto it also Im fully comp on my Mk gti Cabby and that cost me ?550 also with my fella on it... I have 3 yrs no claims.

At the end of the day your 21 its not your father thats gunna drive it. Im 21 and I have my own house.
I would say a Mk2 would be cheaper to buy and maintain as engine parts for a Mk3 can be quite pricey and you very rarly see em in a scrap yard so you would have to buy em new.

Parents are there to put you off, if you don't do what you want now, then you may regret it when you get older. If it does cost you tonnes cos you get a sh!tter by accident then nothing you can do, Never have regrets thats my motto, NOW!
