Title: Not starting and not turning over
Post by: wolfrace on 31 March 2004, 16:48
Probably had this post a few times already. Getting my uncle out to look at it this weekend.
Thought I'd get your views though.

Drove the car home and everything fine. Parked her, turned her off. Went indoors for 10 mins came back out went to start her ...a click then nothing! Not even turning over. Everything lights up as per usual but nothing - dead. Doesnt even jump start. Thinking its the starter motor but if there is anything else then your views are welcome.

Cheers

does the solenoid click when u try to turn it over?

if it doesnt.. here's how to fix..

tools needed : 10mm socket or spanner, wire brush or sandpaper, wd40, carrier bag and a laccy band.  disconnect the negative from your battery, stick it safe out the way. (i normally use a carrier bag with an elastic band).  find the black wire from the positive on the battery and goes right to the solenoid.  the connection on the solenoid is a 10mm (i think might be 13mm lol) nut.  remove the nut and clean the contact up and put it back on. (took about 30 mins to clean mine nicely) theres another wire there too that goes to something else, i cleaned that a lil as well. put a bit of wd40 over it all after u put it back together to keep water out in future.

two things you can try beforehand

1.. use a multimeter from battery +v to the solenoid and see if it 'buzzes out' (continuity test)

2.. at your own risk... you can also test it by creating a parallel connection there with a jump lead from battery postive to the solenoid connection..

(this happened on mine last sunday)

if not its most likely the starter (this just went on mine today), could still be the solenoid itself though.

if its the solenoid connection you -may- be able to push-start it. (i was able to)

if its the starter you'll hear the solenoid click, and should be able to push start it.  it may work fine (for a while) after that, or it may not. (mine didnt tody... new one tomorrow..)

This couldn't be something to do with the immobiliser? I had this on a previous car it wouldn't start, nothing happened at all turned out the immobiliser wasn't disarming.

nah, i asked him to reply here so everyone can lend their expertise..

they got it started by tapping the starter, from what he said i think it still starts ok now so its not shagged like mine was.

but he's a lil worried as it idles really roughly.
