its an 8v thats been bored to 1.9 and has a lairy cam in it and has a set of koni coilovers on it
the plans still the same as the red one, 2.0l 16v it with a widetrack, fully polybushed, h&r arb'ed, chassis
p.s the bbs will be for sale very soon if anyones interested
-
looks tidy for an OLDER lady
-
I really like that.
-
wow looks just like mine did when i first got it (except for the small window doors)!
looks nice To Be Fair (ho ho ho)
-
budum chhhh  2 cars in a row now that the number plate stands for something, last one was Actual Bodily Harm
its not as tidy as the pictures look, but it will be
-
that looks ok that darl...look forward to the updated pics once you have had a bit play around with it
Dinx
-
I very very nearly bought that when it was on ebay.
looking at those photos im now jealous.
-
i got it cheaper than the ebay ad! once i sell the wheels, the coilovers and the engine it should be pretty much a free car
-
Much awesomeness mate!
Nick
-
i got it cheaper than the ebay ad! once i sell the wheels, the coilovers and the engine it should be pretty much a free car
cheap coilovers then?
-
dunno which ones im selling yet, ive got a set of konigsports and konis now so ill bolt the widetrack and arb's and bushes on and then decide which ones i want
-
Update time!
i started the engine conversion yesterday, but made no progress because it took me the whole day to get my head round the wiring loom  big thanks to rubjonny for some advice. by the way anyone attempting this conversion it is NOT a plug and play swap  like most forums say it is
anyway today
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v434/veedub16v/Photo-0142.jpg)
be gone sh!tty 8v
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v434/veedub16v/Photo-0143.jpg)
that hole looks 16v shaped
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v434/veedub16v/Photo-0140.jpg)
its replacement
i also removed the wishbones, brakes, driveshafts, rack, old loom, full exhaust and fitted the passat wishbones and g60 brakes
more to come tomorrow
-
16v loom is in, as is pas rack and 16v exhaust and i also sorted out some surface rust in the engine bay. hammerite was applied liberally with a big brush ready for the show season
hopefully the 16v should be in tomorrow
-
not wasting any time are you!!?
-
Good work fella, hopefully see you monday!
Nick
-
not wasting any time are you!!?
yeah i dont f**k about
fingers crossed nick, im still a bit dubious about the wires but ill see what happens
-
i got the 16v in place today with gearbox and changed a load of seals that i forgot about! i didnt get as much work done as id liked because the bolts i had for the flywheel went missing so had to go to 2 branches of vw to get them.
tomorrow i have the driveshafts to bolt up then its a case of plugging in all wires and vacuum stuff and ecu then i have to work out why it wont start
-
Loving the retro small bumpers 16v. Should be a bit of a street sleeper when finished
-
looking good, hows the wide track working out? noticable difference in width?
-
yeah its an extra 32mm at the front and 20mm at the back, i had the same setup on an old golf and its a nice improvement, the car feels a lot more stable on quicker corners.
well today i got most of it finished but have had to stop as its just started hailing really hard! i forgot i dont have a rotor arm or air filter so i cant finish it until tomorrow anyway.
-
what different parts do you use at the back then? the whole rear beam? and how does all this affect the camber?
-
nah i got some spacers made up that fit behind the stub axle and you can buy the appropriate bolts from ford, think they are for a cosworth something or other but they are a bit longer and are a higher tensile rating. i found the info on club gti.
the camber at the back is unaffected but at the front the least negative camber you can have is approx -1.25 degrees! which suits me fine. im sure with a bit of filing on the top strut bolt hole and using those thinner bolts you could get closer to original camber.
-
ITS ALIVE!!!!
im well happy, it fired up straight away and after a quick setup it idles nicely! I was sure nothing would work properly but the only problem i have is the brake light is permanently on  oh and i snapped the speedo drive where it goes into the back of the clocks :embarassed:
Joe you can see the new position of the wheels in that pic, they are 7x15's and fill the arches perfectly, just about sit inside
The rear beam still needs changing and i need to put the front of the car back together, plug in all the front lights, put the fusebox back and put the dash back together, then bleed the brakes and do the tracking. The target is to drive it tomorrow night
-
Good work mate!
-
I have got it pretty much up to scratch now, just a few little problems to sort out. Heres the finished pics

-
cheers, yeah im quite pleased
yea I bet mate. You must be a dab hand at these 16v conversions now
-
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v434/veedub16v/DSC01622.jpg)
-
good work! been doing alot of talking with a guy about optimum ssupension geometry today... make for some interesting thinking....
-
cool, whats his opinion?
-
Looks hard as nails that! Nice one!
-
cool, whats his opinion?
well kinda what is obvious... if you lower a car too much it has a negative effect on handling, but he's been working on ways to over come it and to get the wishbones back into a reasonable position. his mk1 doesn't have wishbones as such but uses a rose jointed set up that sits lower under the hub and relocated the track rod arms to keep everything at an almost factory level, while the car itself is lower.
also running a hefty rear anti roll bar and no front one. he explained it all well but i'm not so good at typing it all out from memory!
-
ah he must be using balljoint spacers, they allow you to go lower with the wishbones still paralel.
funny he doesnt run a front arb, maybe it works on a mk1 but at the moment i have the standard front arb (18mm) and a 28mm rear plus the standard one (the suppliers are fannying about with the bushes) and i dont like it! the turn in is like a bit delayed and vague. i dont have the front polybushed subframe on yet either so that might be contributing.not that i can rag it yet as the arches still need rolling.
-
Looks spot on bud! Bet it goes like stink.
Nick
-
Its not too shabby! The improvement in torque is great, you can accelerate in any gear at low revs, but im not that impressed by the top end improvement. It is quicker but it feels like its not getting quite enough fuel maybe. It would make sense as the kjet on there is setup for a 1.8. Stealth should be able to sort that out for me
Saying that i did record a 6.74 0-60 on the old g-tech, so it cant be that slow lol. (with bald front tyres and no practice )
Bloody wheel bearing has gone on it as well, annoyingly its only about 15k miles old. I think ill buy the next one from vw

Pure sex! Lovely motor :)
-

-
My oil temp has been getting a bit high lately and it was only going to get worse on the track so i have fitted a mocal oil cooler
i have switched to a single headlight grill so the cooler can go behind where the driver spotlight was. i prefer the twin light grills, but function over form and all that

and obligatory bbs shot

-
Why not but the intercooler below the bumper? Arn't those vents to the sides adaptable?
Looks good though! :afro:
-
it looked too tight down there for space because of the curve of the front valance, plus it would get battered by stones more i would have thought. a good place if you have big bumpers though!
-
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v434/veedub16v/DSC01958.jpg)
i took some decent pics of it with the new grill, they might be growing on me!
-
Looks good mate, we'll have to hook up sometime after work and go for a shoot!
Nick
-
i bet your camera will show up all the dents on it lol, but yeah im up for that!
-

got some new wheels and tyres for trackdays!
if anyones interested the r888's cost the bargain price of £231 delivered from tyretraders.co.uk.
also got some pics from a mates camera of the pistonheads track evening
(http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/9578/p7170165jo1.jpg)
my poor tyres
-
i did another track evening at brands and did a whole 4 laps before a split oil pipe spoilt the day.
the r888's are great! but as with all upgrades its pointed out the next weak link  i might have to get some stiffer springs........
a few pics (not so many to choose from this time  )

Your car looks soooo good out on track!
Nick
-
cheers mate, come along to the next day if your about, i might be back at brands on the 5th nov for an afternoon session
-
I've got loads of holiday to use up so I may well be up for it. Can't afford to run the Rado out, any chance of a trip in the passanger seat?
Regardless it'll be a good day of getting my photography Mojo on the go.
nick
-
yeah course you can, it might cost you a tenner though. ill let you know if i book it
-
Let me know aswell mate i'm not far from Brands so could pop up!
-
yeah will do. i was hoping prept started a bit earlier on wed as i was there anyway, but no golfs in sight at 5.30 so i went home
-

can you see whats wrong? i have put an arrow pointing to the afr line which should stay level instead of shooting up, meaning it was running too lean (almost dangerously!)
i have richened it up a bit today and it does feel better, but i now have no faith in my gunsons exhaust gas tester so will take it to an mot garage tomorrow and use theres to get the co on 2.0% :afro:
looking at mews graph from his 2.0 16v the graphs are identical till mine tails off at the end, and his peak power is 6.8k ish whereas mine is 6.1 ish so im sure my engine has got 165bhp in it once setup nicely
-
i went to brands again on the 12th for my last track day of the year. turned out to be ideal conditions but unfortunately the ht leads broke down in the afternoon so was restricted to partial throttle and about 5k to avoid a nasty misfire. At least i got a whole day in on the r888's, which at the moment i havent really mastered as the grip is so much higher than road tyres! also let my friend dave drive my car (very good driver, has been karting since he was 8 ) and has shown me the car has a lot more to give! better get practising.....
heres a few pics

also got a 20 minute session in last sunday in which i has a great battle with an oldish porsche (think it was g reg). i came up behind him in the traffic and followed for 3-4 laps, then a car overtook us both and i snuck past him as well, he chased me for a few laps but was blatantly quicker on the straights so i let him past, then chased him for a few more laps until he spun in front of me exiting druids  i soo need a camera setup for these moments (and so i can prove it lol)
-
i found some pics from the day mentioned above :afro:

theres that porsche!
also had to change the drivers side outer cv joint at the weekend in sub zero teperatures  i think the trackday abuse is starting to show lol
-
I had to change my thermostat whilst it was -2!
-
it makes the job take twice as long having to thaw the fingers out every 15mins doesnt it
btw im eyeing up a trackday at brands on feb 13th, ill let you know if i book it if you still want to come
-
You are a one track wonder.

just waiting for my uni bursary to be confirmed then im booking it, should be monday
cool, i'm waiting for my student loan ;)
-
did another trackday on friday at brands (for a change). it was a good day for it, was a bit wet in the morning but there was a dry line by 11 for the rest of the day. lots of nice cars there as always, and i can now say i was (overtaken lots) on track with lawrence bristows btcc sierra cosworth r500  there were quite a few golfs there, 3 other mk2's and the infamous reeves mk1 also. heres a few pics nicked from raw action photography in a poor student kinda way

Looks a good day mate, how many sets of wheels did you use? I think I count 3!
nick
-
just 2 sets, i used rainsports in the morning then switched to r888's. thats another c reg that was there in the bottom pic represening the dubs
-
Oh yeah it has too many doors. Damn my hungover eyes.
Nick
-
picked up a shed head yesterday   wooooo!
should be fitting it at the end of the month if all goes to plan

but with the pleasure comes the pain, on the way home battery light came on so i had a look and the alt belt had dissapeared. upon closer inspection that piece of sh!t slipper pulley has gone all loose  i used a shoelace to get me home but am now looking to fit the mk3 belt/alt/pas setup so i can be rid of that slipper pulley once and for all. (vw want over a ton for one  )
also got round to uploading a trackday video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUqd9HCwXuU
-
Nice vid but having been in the passenger seat on that circuit it looks so slow to how it feels in the car.
The head looks ace as well.
Nick
-
yeah speed always looks slow when filmed. definately more fun inside the car
-
its time to proper strip the golf
unfortunately finding a big hole of rustyness has put a downer on things, but it looks salvageable and non structural so not so bad.
heres how it looked after today
(http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/4909/dsc04471k.jpg)
err why can i see my tire
-
ooooops, well at least its straight forward to put a plate on there. how close is it to the fuel neck, do you recon you ll have to take the tank out?
-
yeah ill take the tank out. i think i might have to cut out and remake the bracket that holds the fuel neck but ill decide when the tank is off
-
Lookin bud (well apart form the hole!).
nick
-
today i finished cutting all the studs and brackets off the floor - every little helps!
also decided to cut out the sunroof in preperation for an alloy sheet
i suppose i better stop doing the fun stuff and get on with the rust
-
heres how its looking at the mo
(http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/1300/23052009078.jpg)
im on a rust and seam sealent removal mission at the moment!
the sunroofs been plated and the glue on the floor pan is nearly all gone. once the rust is all sorted im gonna start prepping bits for stitch welding
heres the pile of metal removed from inside the shell
-
That's a lot of metal. What are the bits that aren't from the sunroof from?
nick
-
frame for rear bench, the two brackets on each turret, rear seatbelt plates behind the skin erm thats all i can remember off the top of my head. it all came to about 14kg
-
I best crack out the grinder on mine over the winter then, that's a fair bit of weight.
nick
-
i think 9kg's was just from the sunroof!
-
a bit more progress
(http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/1593/01062009084.jpg)
im gonna be painting the inner arch because of the repairs so it made sense to stitch weld the turret on that side at the same time
also repaired a hole in the sill next to the rear arch. before i finish off the arch area im gonna cut the lip off and weld the two skins together for future tyre clearance a well as getting rid of more rust
-
Nice progress! Hope you're not getting overspray on the TT, ha ha.
Nick
-
that would be a sure way of getting kicked out the garage!
-
also removed 1.5kg of mud from on and around the fuel tank  you can see why they rust up there!
-
Good progress
-
also removed 1.5kg of mud from on and around the fuel tank  you can see why they rust up there!
You weighed some mud?
Nice progress though!
-
haha, just a guesstimation. the bin felt like 1 and a half bags of sugar
-

I might have to see how much mud I can remove from mine now!
-
i have pretty much finished working on the offside arch, just need to get the rest of the underseal off at the top of the inner arch and do a few more stitches. its a f**king horrible job and ive still got the other side to look forward to! you can feel how much stronger the shell is jst by pushing the panels though, cant wait to drive it again
have also decided that the rear panel needs cutting off and replacing! oh joy
-
Good progress mate, take it the neck is feeling better!
Nick
-
kinda, the pain has moved to my back now
-
added a plate for the harness bar and undersealed the arch to finish it off. ive now started working on mounting the bucket seat on some rails and sidemounts. that meant more spot weld drilling to get the runners off. i must be getting better as only 2 holes were left in the shell this time!
also caught me a badboy hornet that was trying to attack me inside the car

Nice work mate! That plate looks proper tidy.
Nick
-
i am posting from my hospital bed after removing half my knuckle with the angle grinder
pics when i get home tomorrow
-
Actual hospital bed? F*ckin hell bud!!!
Nick
-
yeah man im f**king bored
hopefully be going home tomorrow morning if they are happy with it. had to have minor surgery on it this morning under general anasthetic!
-
Sh!t that's not good, I bet it f*cking hurt. I hate angle grinders and always wear super tough gloves, but even then I know they're not much protection.
If you're stranded for a bit give me a shout and i'll shoot round after work one night and take you out for a beer.
Nick
-
cheers bud
-
christ that sounds horrible!! i bet that did hurt a lot!
fair play to you for posting from your hospital bed!
hope you make it home soon

who's eating their lunch
took a quick pic while the bandage was being changed. after chatting to the doc today i think its gonna be unlikely that i can get the car finished before the prept trackday, which sucks
-
Strange - when I've nicked myself with the grinder I've generally stopped when I've noticed I was cutting into my flesh, or it's hurt.
Fewer 'stranger w@nks' young man - it looks like it's causing nerve damage.
-
that was a nick with the grinder!
was using one of those badboys
-
Man that looks painful, looks to be healing Ok though.
i think its gonna be unlikely that i can get the car finished before the prept trackday, which sucks
I've not booked mine yet due to possible lack of jobage. If you haven't got it done and if you can you want to swap the evening onto my car and go twos?

mmmm goooey  hope ya get sorted soon
-
Meh, clear lack of either tool control, or sufficient PPE.
Workshop skillz FAIL.
-
ill wear my high vis jacket next time :afro:
-
harness bar and arch all ready to be welded now. just need to get the seat rails in position then my mate can get all the remaining welding done.
-
Good work mate, that bar looks pretty meaty and should stiffen up the back end loads as well!
Nick
-
yeah thats the plan! the stitch welding should make a big difference as well. when i was turning the car around you could tell the shell was stiffer when jacking it up just from one arch being welded
-
Nice! Wish I had the money and space to do this to mine.
nick
-
tbh it doesnt cost much, it just takes a long time and a lot of effort  if you were paying for the labour then yeah it would be very expensive
i wouldnt like to do it outside though, plus the neighbours wouldnt be that impressed.
-
more welding

-
That's gonna be stiffer than a porn star after a good fluffing!
Nick
-
well all the above work was tested last night at brands hatch and has made a very noticeable improvement! the car feels more composed in the corners and even though my confidence isnt 100% with it yet it felt like i was lapping faster and with no tyre squeal, which i used to get on most of the corners.
i sneeked it onto the weighbridge at the end of the pits.....918kg with a full tank of fuel!
a few pics pinched from horney anf tjg

H'mmmm, so +2 doors, + 4WD + 280mm brakes + cable-change - 8V - (glass windows - polycarb windows) - ((Scirroco seats +3-point belts) - (buckets + harnesses)) = +~140kg
-
i also have 280's, and only one bucket/harness setup, the passenger side is still the standard golf setup with seatbelt so weight to be saved there. the arb's i have also add a fair bit of weight.
-
I reckon that rear brace bar is a few extra KG's as well.
I hear you got told off sneaking into the bridge as well!
Nick
-
I hear you got told off sneaking into the bridge as well!
I should bloody well hope so - can't have people sneaking off, stealing our weights!
-
they are normally ok with people using it but someone had rented that garage as there was a sidecar project in there, but it had to be done! i was too curious lol
-
another photo i found on e38

the car got a good thrashing at
brands silverstone today. apart from a snapped doorhandle, broken shift rod, and broken fuel gauge it went great! i missed my slot with the instructor because of the shift rod issue as well which sucked
a couple of laps onboard

Brands? You must be as knackered as me!
nick
-
Quality video, wish I could get up tomorrow and do it all again. Sooooo don't want to go to work.
Nick
-
haha its habit!
-
im taking the golf off the road for a while now so i can work on the front of the shell. the engine will be coming out soon and all seams welded same as the back. for now i have been stripping the dashboard area and removing the last of the sound deadening and glue. man i hate that glue!
have also been removing unused wires from the loom and generally tidying up bits, like fitting a new interior light instead of the old one ducktaped to the ceiling
-
Man you've been busy! What's the plan with the dash? Is it going back in?
nick
-
yep its going back in with a bit of lightening and the outer vents removed. its always gonna be there but ultimately it might be a fibreglass shell. a la touring cars
-
Carbon fibre OE shaped dash would be awesome!
I might cut the passanger side off mine (leaving the ducting for screen clearance).
Nick
-
(http://scch-heads.com/images/projects/shifterleverwithpanel.jpg)
wot, like that ^
-
Horney likes that!
Nick

more strippage happened today

-
Not long till welding time then!
nick
-
So, we should expect a post from Mark about having arc-eye before too long, going on the previous performance.....
-
my mate doing the welding gets the arc eye, i just burn myself on the underseal fires the other side
-
(http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/5583/dsc04601e.jpg)
heres the car after todays effort. i have pretty much stripped everything off and have now started removing metal/underseal etc. decided to remove the scuttle tray as im only gonna need it for the heater vent fresh air, but its easy enough to make some ducting, which will be lighter anyway. removing that revealed sh!t loads of underseal and another layer of sound deadening to be removed
-
Bloody hell you don't hang about!
Nick
-
sound proofing, towing eye and a bit of underseal removed today
-
Don't you need the towing eye for if you come off?
Nick
-
yep gonna whack an ally or a strap type one on there. 1/2 a kilo lost
-
Ha ha nice one, I want to put some straps on both of mine for that race car look!
You coming to the Reading Meet tomorrow?
nick
-
yep, need to change a wheel bearing on the corrado first though so might be a bit late!
-
Coolio, I really need to do both rears on mine as they were an advisory on the MOT back in August!
Nick
-
slightly boring update....
have been removing underseal mainly, its almost ready for welding now. i am using the car as part of my uni dissertation now so really need to pull my finger out!
homemade dolly ftw!
-
Looks well solid for a 25 year old car!
nick
-
i know! theres one small bit of rust that needs cutting out on the battery tray and a bit around the wiper hole but apart from that its solid. you can see why these cars last though when you see how thick the underseal is. properly well built cars
-
the fronts getting there now, the interior is welded as well as one inner arch, just need to prep the engine bay and other arch now.

also i bought the car a few presents

-
weeeey! finished welding! the whole car has been stitched now minus underneath, but that can wait till next year.
i relocated the expansion tank bracket for later when a roll cage goes in, and i will be using the small washer bottle you get in the back of the early mk2's in place of the one normally there.
also had to plate over the turrets as where the new topmounts are fixed is right on the ridge
(http://img692.imageshack.us/img692/7692/dsc04817.jpg)
just got to paint the thing now! but what colour
-
Atlas Grey!
Nick
-
Oak Green!
-
im thinking a bit lairier than that! being a track car and all. orange?
but atlas grey is my backup choice if i cant decide. in tribute to my first gti that got crashed
(http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/4541/ec110041.jpg)
RIP D10 MRK
-

Complete opposite, but i think the metallic brown ( :lipsrsealed: ) that comes on the new mini clubman would look good.
-
lime green!

Sweet looking mk2

yeah it was until idiot here locked up in the rain and skidded into a tree
-
How about orange, with black and yellow rondels?
Like this:
Should help ensure you have plenty of clear track around you on track days
-
thats not a bad idea for a set of removable transfers. would be perfect for action days!
-
Since I made the suggestion, the more I thought about it, the better an idea it seems.
-
thought i might as well weigh the metal and underseal gathered from the front, just under 4kg of underseal and 4.5kg of metal have been removed. i weighed the underseal fron one rear arch and that was roughly 2kg, so a safe guess for the whole car would be 10-12kg of underseal if the floorpan stuff was removed as well
-
i knew i forgot to do something! had to make up a plate for extra clearance for the exhaust and it got welded in today. i didnt really fancy the hammer route some people take
-
Was it knocking before or are you changing system while it's all out?
nick
-
yeah im fitting the manifold thats on page 16. it seems most mk2's with abf's have clearance issues with tubular manifolds
-
Ah cool, must have missed that post!
nick
-
Mark, just caught up with your project, you move fast!
Double that Primer
thom
-
will do! cheers for the paint advice thom.
well i have been waiting for the cold to dissapear so i can paint it, but am running out of time so will have to rent a heater and pant it next week.
i got the manifold wrapped though
(http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/9186/dsc04842l.jpg)
-
painted!
-
Yeah Boi! That looks awesome!
Nick
-
cheers, its not the best job ever but not bad for my 1st go with a spray gun. its easily track day standard though!
i got the grille bit and valance painted as well so its gonna look a bit funky at the front with the black panels
-
You best get painting the rest of it then, ha ha.
Nick
-

Seat Bocanegra look, yeah?
-
i'll go with the half finished look, that seat is butt ugly
-
after todays effort-
(http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/9658/dsc04860f.jpg)
its nice to get it back on its wheels again!
-
Good work mate. Might as well paint the wings and bonnet while they're off.
nick
-
a fibreglass bonnet will be fitted sometime so its not worth spraying the standard one
wings can wait until the body gets sprayed, it would look even funkier with grey wings! cant be accused of being scene now can i
-
its starting to resemble a car again
engine goes in next, then the dreaded wiring :undecided:
im gonna have to leave it for a week or so now to get some uni work done unfortunately
-
the engine has gone home
-
nice one, look forward to having a perv at your paint skillz next week.
nick
-
you can check out where i scratched it all putting the engine back in
-
Doh!
-
Feel free to crack on with mine once this is done
-
 if yours is still off the road after i have finished uni i could lend a hand, unless you want to do my dissertations in return
-
Why'd you take the scuttle out?
-
preparing for cage, losing weight, better access
i might have a problem with the heater air smelling of engine but a bit of ducting is easy enough to make
-
getting there!
-
Looks good, I see the scuttle is Atlas Grey
When you hoping to book it for an MOT?
Nick
-
i'd rather not say
shouldn't be long though. The wirings the only big job left to do
do you reckon linseed oil will sort the bumpers? i'm thinking they might be past saving
-
I reckon it may work. I've got a load so I'll bring it round on wednesday and we'll give em a going over.
nick
-
i got a fair bit done over the weekend and the car is almost ready. just waiting on a few bits from vw then i can see if it all works still!
-
linseed oil is mint mate, should do the bumpers no probs i do mine every 2 months or so and they look new.
-
almost there now. i got it started yesterday but had a retarded moment and forgot to plug in the oil pressure gauge line so had a fountain of oil coming from the filter housing  so the last hour of daylight was used cleaning that up
i have to say, a 16v with just the exhaust manifold on it sounds f**king awesome
-

lol, mate did that other day to mine. he forget to put the hose clip back on for the bottom rad hose and as i drove off there was an explosion of water :D luckily it just evapourates.....
-
just been out for a short test drive (on my private test track) the car feels really good surprisingly! just a few jobs to get done for the mot now so it should be road legal by the end of the week
12 days till trackday :undecided: iv'e got a lot of tinkering to do lol
-
Nice one, once it's all legal we'll have to go out for a B road blast!
nick
-
the car is now insured, mot'ed and taxed as soon as the bloody insurance certificate arrives!
-
i took the car into uni today to set the geometry and have a go at the corner weights
(http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/754/dsc04896.jpg)
had a little surprise when i weighed it, without me it was 880kg! only had a 1/4 tank of fuel though and i think i had r888's on last time it was weighed. the corner weightings wasn't that successful though and i suspect the springs are knackered and all have different rates. something to add to the wish list!
-
Good news and bad news then. Those corner weights with you sat in it or empty?
Nick
-
yep thats with driver
lhd conversion needed?
-
Dumb-ass - your car's got LHD springs on it. Change them over for a RHD set and that should fix it.
....or is it corner-weighted in anticipation of Chuff riding shotgun?
-

-
ah that explains it, i'll dig out my left handed socket set to fit them
just realised they weren't the final weights, i got the front a bit better and the rear a bit worse  final weights -
297 324
155 191
it would be nice to have another go getting them better but it won't be before the trackday on friday. today was more of a learning exercise, its not easy!
-
Had an awesome day today at brands testing out the car with its added stiffness. There were loads of golfs there, which was nice!
The gear rod snapped again  but i whipped it off and took it to a local welder and was back out an hour later. Think i need to get a new one now or replace a section of it with some beefier tubing as its cracking further down each time and barely goes through the bush now because of all the weld. This is the 4th repair on it
The exhaust also started blowing really bad early on and the cabin was a bit fumey, so if i don't post here in the next week i have died of carbon monoxide poisoning
The car felt great other than that and the springs just not being suitable anymore. They are far too soft for the chassis and are progressive which is good for the road but sh!t for track. The shell stiffening was noticeable though and apparently I was cocking a wheel through druids and clearways
No photo's as the raw action photography guy wasn't there, but i have some video footage ill upload shortly
-
Sounds like an awesome day, bet your're high as a kite on the fumes!
nick
-
yep!
do you know a free video editor program that's good for youtube? the windows one sucks
-
Fraid not as I use iMovie on the mac :-( try googling it and see what comes up.
nick
-
Adobe Premier Pro CS3 isn't hard to come by out there..... and the whole suite is FG
-
i got a converter for the windows movie file in the end
part 1

That sounds insane, love it!
nick
-
gotta love a blowing exhaust
-
Good video. Did you see our 'worn' tyre that was causing some vibration issues?
-
yeah i saw that! good work  i'm surprised it went on the inside of the o/s though?
i heard about the green porsche's engine getting buzzed, fingers crossed the damage is minimal.
-
That's worse than my tyre from silverstone. Good work
nick
-
the golf's back in action now after redoing the exhaust system and fixing the shift rod.
It turned out the main source of exhaust blowing was the lambda bolt falling out  i must have forgot to nip it up. Doh! I have added a flexi to the manifold and welded the centre pipe to the middle box now so theres now only two clamped joins in it. Can't believe the difference this has made over the bodged together system i used for the trackday, theres loads more torque now!
for info, a 2 1/4" system with just the two back boxes is 96db, so very trackday happy  i thought it was gonna be louder tbh
the sift rod will do for now, but 1st and 2nd are a bit hard to get. Not surprising really as this is the 5th repair on it  think ill put up with it until i'm ready for a 02a box with bias pedal box setup, then at a later date change the fd and fit a lsd to the box. I might as well separate it into 2 jobs as 1, an lsd is f**king expensive and i'm not splitting the box more than once and 2, i can check the box i buy is a goodun before spunking money on it
-
for info, a 2 1/4" system with just the two back boxes is 96db, so very trackday happy
Don't take it to the 'ring or Bedford Autodrome then
-
well it wont ever be going to bedford from what i have heard about it
whats the ring limit?
-
Mines 96db as well.
nick
-
96db c reg club!
-
whats the ring limit?
95Db
I come in under 90db. Now that's trackday friendly.
IIRC Danny's ABF with Supersprint back box and long-haul tubular manifold clocks 87-88db.
Don't know what you rude boys are doing wrong.
-
Don't know what you rude boys are doing wrong.
Massive powerflow wrongness in my case!
Nick
-
under 90db just means theres room for improvement  silencers are heavy don't ya know
its all about pushing the limits
-
done a few small jobs to it recently, the dash holes needed tidying up so these have been covered with carbon sheet, and i had a go at lightening the front bumper, theres a bit still to cut out from the brackets but i want to use a holesaw and don't have one suitable at the mo. 2kg saving so far, the bumper weighs 6 to start with
(http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/9748/18042010198.jpg)
-
compression checked it last night to see what the effect of kr head + abf block had, 15bar/220psi across all 4
which i believe works out at a cr of 10.85:1, so a little up on standard
-
Nice! I was going to do mine at the weekend but never got round to it.
Nick
-
(http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/3253/03052010202.jpg)
airbox butchered!
-
now that's what I call a well butchered air box! Good job on the lot!
-
That looks pretty good mate.
Nick
-
iv'e poly'd the rear engine mount with some resin i found on ebay
(http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/6872/dsc04977q.jpg)
let the vibrations commence!
-
Oooh this sounds interesting. Look forward to hearing how it feels.
Nick
-
Looks pikey to me.
Just go G60 FFS.
-
it looks f**king pro to me
g60 mount is too soft for what i want
-
How would you know that then?
I guess you're just looking to shake loose as many bolts on the mounts as possible....
-
well what i do is do the opposite to you, that way i know its pro
you guess wrong, i'm looking to rattle bolts loose all over the car, its my new weight saving technique
(or it could be due to the tight clearance between manifold and shifter box)
-
fitted it, works really well, feels solid as a rock now
just gotta start chasing the 20 or so rattles now
-
manky old door cards disposed of and replaced with a thin sheet of ally
it only came in white so i might paint them black or flock them sometime
-
It's a b'stard getting the door handle hole right, isn't it?
-
they were made out of cardboard first so pretty easy tbh. I say 'they' as the inners of the doors were different  not sure why
-
Not just me then.
I presumed my template making sucked.
Apparently not..... or maybe your template making sucks as badly as mine does....
-
the car got ragged round castle combe yesterday
as per normal with me and trackdays, i had gear linkage issues in the morning  for some reason the quick shift link decided to start chafing on the linkages, so that was removed.
the new ebc yellow pads were decidedly sh!t, maybe something to do with the hot day, but they faded quickly and left a blue tint on the discs, indicating overheating i think.
heres a vid of a session from one of those ebay cams mounted on the bumper
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSC5YgekCDs
part 2 to follow....
-
Nice work on the bumper cam. Really wish I'd put mine there now.
Nick
-
i want one for the back bumper as well now  quite an impressive bit of kit for a tenner!

-
awesome little vids, booo, whys the bonnet up on the last pic?
-
cool pics nick!
bonnet is up cos the gears got stick in 5th, then stuck in neutral when i got it out of 5th  good old rod change
also, while i had the front on axle stands sorting the gear change, i noticed the diff is spinning slightly off centre  diff rivet failure imminent  its gonna happen sooner or later
-
I'm not gonna ask how you check the diff, I'd rather live in ignorance
Better get shopping for a cable change box and a shift tower then eh?
nick
-
the inner cv's were wobbling!
-
have got some rot removal to do at the rear for my next job, i found a half decent mk2 shell down a scrappy last year and cut bits off the back to patch mine up with. whats been done so far-
(http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/2740/imag0007w.jpg)
the car has been rear ended at some point in its life and the rear panel swapped, and being a c reg it shouldn't have the badge at the back, so thats getting plated over as well
-
That's an improvement over the gaffa tape
Looks good mate. You been doing this in the evenings after work?
nick
-
right hand side bits now tacked on ready for welding, tow eye also removed for a strap one like the front  just got to do the same on the left now
(http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/6139/imag0016.jpg)
-
Nice work!.. wish i could weld.
-
yeah so do I!
-
the patches have been welded up  i think thats all the rust sorted on the shell now
(http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/9358/imag0028s.jpg)
one of the holes
(http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/531/imag0021v.jpg)
i read somewhere that if you put a copper behind a hole bigger than should be welded it won't stick to the weld. well, its not true  well at least the value of the car has gone up by 2p
(http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/6654/imag0030l.jpg)
-
Time to get the filler and rattle cans out then!
I wish I could de-rust mine :(
Nick
-
theres a days worth of grinding to do first
-
Good work :afro:
-
Watch those fingers this time!
If you just want it blown over afterwards might be worth getting chris down to do it for ya. I'm sure he would be up for it.
Which reminds me, if you're not working sunday he's racing at Combe in the Mini. 2 races for him plus lots of other cool stuff on track. If you want to go there's room in the Polo of doom and no need for diesel money.

i think i'm gonna leave it in primer until the rest is ready to spray
-
Primer is not waterproof though so you might want to slap on some black halfords special paint.

Think I sold two for that price. Odd thing is the buyer didn't turn up for a couple of weeks and then told me I'd need to wait another month for collection. They were duly weighed in as he wouldn't pay my reasonable storage costs
-
Just sat down with a beer to read this whole thread... loving the work done! :afro:
-
just taken delivery of some bits for the next project  not sure when it will get started, lots more parts gathering to do and i wouldn't mind doing another track day this year after the back is finished

Get it to the Island and I can store it for you....
-
I bought that golf so this shell will defo be going within a month, free to a good home! Forgot to say, i welded up the gearstick hole and removed the frame from underneath so it would have to run with internal cable shift!
Would be a shame to scrap it
