Title: Not Yet An Owner Looking For Advice
Post by: THiNK on 10 February 2008, 14:08
Hey Guys,

I'm sorry to say i don't have a Golf

However I do have a wad of cash burning a hole in my pocket ready to purchase one

So i'm after any advise on what i should be looking for, things to spot, and what model for the cash I have i should be looking for.

What I want:
5 Door
Diesel
'Bit' sporty
Jazz Blue/Silver/Black

What I have:
£6k to spend

I have been looking around and think I can get a nice spec'ed mk4 with a 2000ish reg plate. I also think i can get a 1.9GT version.

Of course i'm looking for advice so may be wrong.

So if you had the cash what would you go for? Any links to any example cars you can share?

Thanks in advance,

CS

rhyso stay calm!!!!

why you after a diesel mate? if you got the 1.8t 150bhp you could get a nice one probs with low mileage for around £4000 and spend the rest on remaps' bigger turbo sports cat and straight thru exhaust and make around 220bhp? but then again you wont get the mpg that a derv can offer. just a thought tho!!!

Thanks for this.

I want to make sure i get a good mpg for the motorway runs i have to do

I'm not after  mega supped up car now (been there done that) just a nice comfortable reliable car that i can put my own tweaks to such as a remap etc. I'd like to do these myself so just get a factory fit car to start with.

you can get a TDI 150 for 6 grand but its not going to be in the best condition or spec for tht sort of money.

i'd be looking at the 130 if i had 6K, you can always re-map / replace the turbo if you're finding the 130 sluggish (which you wont)

115, 130 and 150 are available in GT spec which means you get all the GTI goodies as standard; it was then down to the owner as to what extras were specfied - mine went for the 16 inch wheels and CD player; have a look around to see what comes with what

as Ridge said; you can get a 150 but it won't be great; look for a tidy 130 and spend £300 on a remap; will be quicker than a standard 150 then :afro:

Cool thanks guys.

So based on the comments i'm after a Golf mk 4 ,1.9 GT TDI 130, unmapped (so i can do that myself if needed).

What sort of mileage should be on the cars in my range i am looking at ?

What spec should I get for that ? What was standard and what was optional extras such as air con etc etc

Thanks :)

CS

the GT's are the 1.9 TDI 110, 115, 130, 150 and the GTI's include the 1.8T, 1.8, 2.0 petrols

some insurance companies / websites list some of the TDI's as GTI TDI's, also ignore any badging that on the back, as these can be easily changed and were quite often badged randomly by the dealers.

Yeah, you'll see some diesels with GTI (red I or a silver I) - doesnt mean anything, random badging.

I think the standard 16" BBS look good. If you have a budget of £6k then take out £300-400 out of your budget for a remap to 170bhp (you will enjoy the power and get the benefit of an even better mpg!)

As far as what to check for, make sure the air con works, all elec windows, and no knocking when turning the wheel - common faults, not that there are many on Golfs of course!

Def can get an 02 reg GT TDI with 50k or less.

Cheers mate, looking at the forum the remap seems to be the only way forward so take 3/400 off my budget to do that and i think i'm on to a winner.

Now to find one, its harder than the needle i stood on in the haystack at the weekend.
