Title: number - under the engine

on my multiple trips under the golf today cleaning up oil I found a indentifcation mark with 9a then 5 numbers

what does this mean please

its at the gearbox end of the engine underneath

Stoopid question no doubt but i is learning slowly of the VW ways  :grin:

Well that would mean that at some point somebody has removed the Kr lump and fitted it with a 2.0 9a

 oops - look like i fcuked up - its on the  bell housing of gearbox not the engine  :laugh:

engine number matches log book its a kr one -



so - what does that plate mean about my gearbox ??? as i got one of those weird 8 pin plugs where the normal 2 pin reverse gear should be  :cry:

ive got a 9a number on my 8v gearbox.............so that blows that thoery out the window  :drool:

it just means the gearbox code is 9a, which is correct for an early valver :)
the difference is it has a combined upshift light/reverse switch, whereas the 2y box just has a reverse light switch :)

going to change the box for the spare one I got in the garage once I have cleaned and painted it up as its got the correct 2 pin switch for the reverse switch.

just fyi you can wire in the upshift switch reverse light pins to a later car, broke has a handy how2:

yeah - keep meaning to buy some connectors to sort that out

have shorted the wires out so know they work ok

and they werent needed for the mot

shall add it to the " To Do " List  :grin:

I thought the 9a gearbox code was for the early 8v? Surley Chuff's 16v is a late model with it being H reg?

Chuff, give me a shout when you get rid of the 9a box currently on the car  :wink:

so i got an early valver box fitted to my late model golf then ??????

still goes well  :grin:

9a is an 8v box, basically identical to the 16v box except it has a taller 5th so lower revs on de motorway :)
