Title: Open up the side honeycomb parts around dim lights
Post by: Peskarik on 09 February 2008, 18:03
I hope I wrote it correctly in English...

Anyway, did anyone consider replacing those plastic parts in the front skirt with ones that have holes in them (that's how this car is supplied to warmer climates, I believe)?

I've seen pics where they have rectangular holes in them plastic parts (still honeycomb pattern). Looks nice. Better ventilation, too.

Unfortunately, couldn't find replacements on German Ebay.  :undecided: I've seen them there before, but not anymore.

if i c those on the gti i think it ruins the look, two square holes in the sides.. why not go the lot or go with the cone shape. not a square cut!

It's plenty warm enough over here, looks like a standard part worldwide...

You's have to contact the TT shop. Judging from some of the other parts I've already ordered I would have thought under £300.

that thing sticks out from the skirt. And 300 quid?  Na, I'd rather have the original ones with holes in them.

I reckon it would look great with ALL the honeycomb cut out.
But I would worry about strength and airflow changes , maybe increase drag = decreased economy lol

Those OSIR parts are nice , and open up the possibility of modifying them a bit more , e.g. R8 lights , or some other detail touch.

this is one way I prefer the horiz slats of the R32 , widens the front end.

last possibility is to remove it all .....

The GTI grills with the big square cut outs (or whatever they are called) are for American GTi's. Over there the first mod is to remove them and fit the universal ones as seen on Phils car.

South Africa is warm and we also get the closed grills. Those carbon ones look awesome. Im starting to really wish my dad would buy my mom a new car  :undecided:

....Not so, according to my sources - The 'square cut' vents were on the early DSG Mk5 GTI's because VW thought that the DSG oil cooler would need more venting. But they found it wasn't necessary and the vents didn't help anyway. So they were dropped from the production line....So I'm told.

However, some of us don't like the 'imitation vent' appearance of the closed ones and bought OEM square cuts from FischerSport.

Why is America still producing GTI's with the square grills then?
Not arguing, just wondering...

The story I've posted might not be true but....

Be right back. Gonna look for a "New Bunny" thread on VW Vortex.

....Mike, I've just looked on GOLFMKV and many of the American boys buy the open ones aftermarket from oempl.us. They are much more into very heavy duty modding as well! Too much methinks sometimes!

HEy.

Was just on VWVortex.
Looked at a random post of a 2008 GTI and it had the closed grills. So I am left to assume you are correct

Gonna look for a post for this sort of topic. Cos as you said. The Americans are way into heavy duty modding  :undecided:

....I found a topic on GOLFMKV where a GTI owner from Miami Beach was specifically asking where to get the open vents he had seen somewhere.

And I found this one with a 2006 GTI and its not dsg as far as I know...With open grills.

http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3675139

Hmmm. So... My moms car is a 2006 plate and we dont have open grills.
So maybe American GTi's before 2008 (WHich I believe there were a lot of changes made to the GTI range) had the open grills but the 2008 models came out with closed grills...

Time to look for a 2007 GTI

Ok. Found. Manual GTI. 2007 model

http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3159887

No square cut grills???

So its a 2006 to 2008 change then? Gonna look for a DSG 2007 model. IF that does not help. Then will email my stealer friend

....Yes, but how do you know if the owner didn't buy aftermarket open grills?
Title: Re: Open up the side honeycomb parts around dim lights

Robin. I have reached my conclusion.

All GTI models from 2005 to 2006 came with the open grills. However in 2007 they closed the grills for both DSG and manual cars. My proof:

http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3360803

Look at the dates on the pics...
So. to finish. The question is. When the did the Euro Gti's stop getting open grills? Or did they ever get them?

Mike

And the conculsion... AGAIN!
Euro Gti's did not get open grills...

http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=47394.0

2006 GTI with DSG.

So maybe it was just a cooling thing in America and with the 2006 to 2007 changes they cancelled the open grills due to them not being needed.

So:

2007 and under got open grills in America only.

Europe and South Africa never got open grills to start with...

Does this sound right?

Anyway supper time now. This research has made me hungry

Apart from it becoming much more flimsy after cutting, it would expose the coloured bodywork in the upper strips. I considered this myself a long time ago.

I honestly dont see why you guys like the open grills.... Just looks.... Like they ran out of plastic before finishing the grill off...

lol.

Each to there own. But then again. Cleaning the open grills is probably easier unlike the closed ones.

Some advice. Stand back when using a high pressure cleaner and spraying the lower grills. Its sprays you back

Robin. Why not have the whole grill open and not just the small square bit? I know the fogs have to go somewhere but I think the whole thing open would look awesome.
