hi all just bought a gti 8v and ive just noticed after a few days of having it that the abs light does not come on.im guessing that the bulb has gone or been taken out
the breaks seem ok they work fine ect.if its not got a bulb in will be checking later and the abs light comes on will the chances be its a sensor fault?if so is it an expensive part/parts to get.any advice will be much appreciated thank you.
-
just checked and the bulb for the abs warning light has blown so im gunna try and get 1 tomorrow and hope that it will all be ok
-
1. When you start the car does it go on an off. If not. Bulb is broken or taken out SO......
2. Find a straight section of road thats quiet, drive at 40mph and slam the brakes on, if you skid and the pedal doesnt vibrate, someone has taken the bulb out or broken it, as the abs is not working.
(this is commen, as they get faults all the time, so peopel cheat to sell it)
Probably only a broken sensor to fix IF its broken, about £17 for a sensor from GSF online.
 Hope that helps, any queiries just ask

Does your handbrake warning light stay on? Infact, does you handbrake warning light even come on when the handbrake is applied?

This would mean a pump or multiple fault with your abs.

handbreak light comes on and off as normal.i took the bit out that has the bulbs in for abs and airbag and the abs bulb is blown so fingers crossed thats the problem..i hope..

If not you can test it now as i said, but just breaking hard and seeing if it kicks in.
If not, use the airbag bulb to test the abs light?
-
and remember the abs fitted to pre 96 cars is prehistoric and some skidding is normal! mine slides when wet/icy and the abs works but not like more modern systems...
oh mines not faulty as its being fully tested and given the all clear?
-
My light is on, good thing i got HOT A$$ brakes, so it really dont matter for now  Its been broken since i joined this forum!
-
right havnt been able to go down any roads and safly brack hard so i went and got a bulb, went to change it but i cant get the old bulb out of the holder tried abs bulb and air bag one and both stuck in there.so im proberly gunna take it to the auto sparkys across from my work and get them to do it.
-
why don't you just buy a working abs/airbag light unit off ebay?
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-Golf-mk3-GTI-VR6-Dash-ABS-airbag-warning-light_W0QQitemZ230218865286QQihZ013QQcategoryZ9889QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
ends at 19:45 today
If you want to get it, take out your old light unit and look on the side of the white plastic to make sure the part no. 1H2 919 235E is the same. Later models had an S on the end

Cheers pete, i think im going to replace both the front ones, just so i dont have to later in life!
-
Why don't you buy two... replace the broken front one... and keep the other new one as a spare to get the maximum life out of the other one..?

I could do but im not as clever as you pete , but i figure they never been done, and its taken me 3 months to get around to doing this one..... so imagine if the other one goes later this year. Maybe i just need to not be so lazy...... :/
-
I can't see the point in replacing both mate fronts mate. Just replace the broken one and buy a spare sensor incase the other front ever goes

You make a fair point there. Its a deal, on order. Need to get the car in tip top before MOT time. When im sure it will fail

ye of little faith... mine passed with one advisory which was slight play in rear wheel bearings. They were new 6 months before, forgot to get them adjusted after 500 miles

Hmmm i just have no faith...... :/ Im sure it will fail for something minor. Just hope its not something gay like emmisions!

Just make sure all the lights work and your number plates aren't falling off. If you're that worried, use some fuel treatment and take it for a long thrash just before the test
