Title: New Key Question
Post by: Jelf on 08 February 2008, 11:16
Hi, Have just bought a MK5 Golf and it only has 1 key.

Have gathered, rather than buying from the dealer, I can purchase a key from elsewhere and get it programmed at the dealers, but I need to match the part numbers inside.

I have took the key apart but none of the numbers match anything on the net so I dont know which key I need.

All I have inside is:

g1.1
01 583 802
PA6-GF/GK30

Please can someone help before my wife loses the only key we have

Hi Jelf  Welcome to the forum.

When the car is new it should have a plastic tag attached to it. This gives the details that the dealer/supplier needs to purchase a remote with the same configuration that matches your receiver in the car. There are two sets of numbers although I am uncertain as to which ones are the codes you would need.

one is a two digit number with a five digit number below it and on the other side of the tag there is a letter (mine is a W) followed by six digits. Neither of these match your numbers. If I was in your postion I would go down to your nearest dealer and ask for help, they should know whether any of the codes you have are of any use.

The other question I would be asking myself is where is the other key. Dodgy sellers sometimes say they have lost the second key and when you take the car they use the second key to steal the car back.

Agree with Hurdy here mate - you should have 2 keys for the car and unless you have them both then your car is potentially at risk. The key code tag should be one of the original keys (it was attached by a plastic tag to one of the original keys). If you do not have this then the supplying dealer (or any VW dealer) should be able to get it no problem. I wouldn't buy a non VW blank key if I were you. The key itself will have to be cut for your particular car and the fob can only be recoded by only the dealer. May be better to have your car and the existing key code changed if you can't get the other key from the seller - why wasn't it supplied ???

Also bear in mind that if your car does go missing and you cannot show two keys, your insurance may not pay out. Not worth the risk IMHO. Hope you negotiated a discount from the seller in lieu of the missing key

Thanks for your replies.

In with the paperwork that came with the car was an invoice from a breakdown recovery company stating the customer has lost the key. So I presume from then on the previous owner just used their second key.

Have contacted my local VW dealer who say it would cost £140 for a new key so was hoping not to go that route but may pop down there and see if they will give me some info on which key I need, but I doubt they will as they have me by the short 'n curlies

Thanks again

Btw have found the guides on this forum very interesting
