Title: YOUR THOUGHTS GENTLEMEN PLEASE!!
Post by: volkston on 08 February 2008, 00:18
Hi all, although new to this forum i am far from new to golfs.  In my yoof i went through 4 mk2s followed by a corrado vr6 (auto for my sins sorry) golf mk3 vr6, passat vr6 (remember them?) and of late have been tooling around in a number of various mk4 golfs, the latest cars are because for a living i am a car dealer, small scale from home having spent 10 years in the motor trade, and have been concentrating on mk4 gtis with some success.

Anyway i recently picked up a mk2 with 40k (you may have seen it in the is yours the lowest mileage mk2 poll) and the plan was to sell it on, but i drove it home remembered that engine sound, exhaust note, the simple leds for all the warning lights, keeping an eye on the oil temperature, and the throttle pedal which has different levels of go depending how hard/low you push it (anyone driving a modern car will know what i am on about) and fell in love all over again !!  I though sod it i am gonna keep it , after all i am 32 now and the mid life crisis looms so thought now was the time to enjoy something for myself which would relight those memories of my early twenties.........

but .................

A couple of people on this site have commented that early mk2s with small bumpers in good nick should stay that way, but that was not what i had in mind.  I fancied big bumpers, caddy panel in the rear lowered suspension, 90 spec kit with g60 arches, and oh so much more,  you know how it is!!  Sorry rambling on a bit, but wanted to know what other people thought, as i am now thinking of off loading the golf and buying either a ready made modded car or a slightly high mileage one with the potential to tweak/finish off into the car i remember from my twenties as i just dont think i will keep the car standard. I still have the urge to make it like i remember, and looking through the post " pictures of your car " (a sticky thread up top of page) i just know thats what i am gonna do!!

So what do you think, you guys appear to have some useful stuff to say, so get saying it!!!!!

Thanks for now, lets see where i go from here.

The purist in me wants to say - sell it to a collector to put away and keep in its original state for the future. The rest of me can't help thinking that that's a damn good base for a project!

Are you planning it as a daily driver or a weekend fun toy?

keep the mk2.forever.although having a newer car is great..i dont believe the mk4 will ever give u the happiness your mk2 does.if i were u id put the mk2 in the garage and build on it to your liking.i think you have good ideas with the g60 arches and so on...buy the mk4 and use it as a daily beater if u do decide to go with it.for me when i see mk4's i just dont think “gti.”i think that the mk4 was the worst design by vw.if i were u id drop a vr6-t  in that mk2.good luck!

A genuine low mileage modded car would be very nice. You can always unmod it later if you want to sell a concourse low miler.

Your car, your choice!

Personally i think it will be easier for you to mod that because its less likely to have hidden damage in 40ish K than a high miler

There are two schools of thought here for me, keep it low miles and treasure it. That way you have a really nice standard VW golf to cherish. But where's the fun in that ! Second thought is to run it as a weekend/fun car but put some miles on it and enjoy it, because what's the point in having a car stuck in the garage that you don't drive !

If it was me I would leave it standard but use it as a second/weekend/fun car, I personally wouldn't mod it but as said above, it's your car so do what you like with it and sod what anyone else thinks. Either that or sell it for good money and let someone else decide what they want to do with it.

Thanks for all the feeback, the car will be my daily driver so will be bombing around all over the country looking at cars to sell and so on, so the mileage will creap up quickly.  I think i am gonna see what other people say over the weekend and go from there, but many thanks to everyone who has taken the time to post so far!!

At the end of the day you should do what you want to do, its your car and if thats what you want to build go out there and build it and dont worry about what people say, its you driving it not them

i understand what your feeling as finding standard low mileage minters isnt easy now but even if you sold it on the next person could mod it anyway and the search for a car you will be happy with could be a long one, not to mention it could turn out to be a nightmare of problems

thanks, I am slowly thinking sod it just mod the thing and be done with it, although my neighbour offered £2500 for it this afternoon and i nearly said yes as it would go some way to either buying a well done modded one or at least to buying the bits for a good one when it turns up.  Trouble is i am always busy and technically i have no idea so would have to pay for someone else to do it all for me, so the cost would soon add up, perhaps i ought to just go back to them mk4s!!

noooooooo keep it mate and do as you wish
personally, if funds allow, i'd put in modded engine, sort out the handling[dont drop it too low], tasteful wheels but leave the outside as standard looking as possible with the small bumpers
you would have soooo much fun mullering all them sports cars

I have a totally standard mk2 16v only "mod" being a magnex rear box. :embarassed:
I drive the car daily (50ish miles) and love every minute of it!
Having gone through a similar train of thought I have decided to enjoy the car as it is for now!
But come summer and beyond lean towards 9A bottom/full exhaust system etc, then who knows one day the 1.8t?!.

This way I will never get bored, will always love the car and will have enjoyed the car as standard upto  another direction I go in, best of both worlds really (well thats my twisted rationale)
