hi ther just new to this site. i have an 89 cabrio 1.8 gti and just started getting this problem the car starts fine and runs fine until i open the throttle right up then it stars to die and stuter but if i let go of the throttle it will idle no problem i can drive the car on just a little throttle it will rev all the way with no hesitation but as soon as i open the throttle up it stars to die again i haqve changed the plugs, leads ,fuel filter, checked the gauze in the tank for any rust nothing found i have used the search on the site to see if icould find any ansers there but couldn'd find anything on it any advice would be much apprecaiated thanks

My next step there would be to try a new rotor arm and a new dizzy cap. Should be cheap enough from GSF. Also, I know you've checked the gauze, but just to make sure, check your filler neck is not rusty as they have a nasty habit of getting rust in the fuel system and it causes no end of problems.

do the spark plugs while you're there, get tripple probe ones if given a choice but i thin std they are tripples anyway.
Try http://www.vwspares.co.uk, normally cheaper than gsf...

cheers for that i'll have look at the filler neck tomorrow and change the dizzy and the rotor arm and let you know thanks
-
well nothing has changed still the same after fitting the dizzy and rotor arm checked the filler neck bit of surface rust nout major if anyone has an idea about wot it might be your help would be much appreciated

It's a long shot as this is usually hot starting problems, but take the fuel relay out (I think its the big one, top left on the fuse box) and check the connections on it and sandpaper them if necessary. Other than that I don't know what it might be, but have you also checked all the wiring and connections in the engine bay, maybe it could be a dodgy earth or a loose wire somewhere, it has been known before.

a good service always is a good place to start i think, then just keep replacing.. trial and error!?
i found my haynes has good troubleshooting tips for probs like this when i've had them :)
Don't give up!

i took the dizzy and rotor back off again and noticed that the part you slide the rotor arm onto has a bit of side to side movement is this normal i gather its supposed to spin round but not wiggle side to side??
-
don't know wot i done played about with the dizzy and it's going mint cheers for the advice much appreciated

Glad we could help. :afro:

Hi, my 89 cab is doing the exact same can you let me know if you get it sorted! cheers
-
the chap did get it sorted, something to do with his dizzy.
my mk1 gti would constantly have problems once it got up to temp, would cut out and refuse to start, eventually worked out it was the hall sender after replacing the dizzy, but i had pretty much replaced everything else in the engine up till that point trying to pinpoint it
such is the lift of a k-jet :D
