Title: Is there a market for mk2s?
Post by: Jon16 on 30 March 2004, 21:50
I've had my 16v for just over a year and been extremely happy with it. It had a few more miles than some but had been fanatically looked after, even in places restored by its former VAG Audi technician owner. But, recently I've bought a Caterham Seven!!! ;D and don't really need another fun car but would prefer a more refined motorway plugger to replace the golf. However, given its condition (hard to believe its done 140k...) and the fact I've not in anyway skimped on it I'm loath to sell it for around ?1000 or the sort of money people seem to be getting for big bumper 3dr 16v mk2s. It that all they're worth? or will we be back to the ?2k mark in the summer? (having looked at lots before buying it and being very aware of all the common problems it remains a masively above average car). Any thoughts?

if it's oak green you'll have no problem selling it

you'd be hard pushed to get 2k for it

it'd need to be a totally mint J reg with FSH etc all possible extra's

you'd maybe get 1600 if you stick it in the likes of PVW or The Golf magazines

although saying that, i've never seen a Royal Blue 16v ever!

Is that Royal Blue dark?

Cos I test drove a dark blue 16v last november before buying the one I got now.

If it's a minter 16v on low miles it can be worth over 2k. It's not easy to find a good Mk2 anymore.

If you can afford the grand, why not keep it? Find somewhere to store it and SORN it for a few years.

If you sell it, you'll only regret it in a few months time. You'll be madly in love with your Caterham, but they'll always be this nagging voice in your head going "you sold me you b*stard", especially when you'll be driving a gutless motorway cruiser.

Keep hold off it.

You know the history of the car and as you say its in very good condition so why sell it?

Keep it as a cheap run around and have some fun with it.

Maybe track day it for fun.

Thanks guys, as I said, I'll sell to an enthusiast if the price is right, otherwise yes I'll keep it. I burst out laughing about the suggestion of tracking it  ;D The great thing about Caterhams is that they're so lightweight track day wear is extremely limited - even a golf would cost much more in wear and tear (and feel like its going backwards in comparison). The golf is a beatifully made and engineered fun car and one I always wanted as a kid but given the limited milleage I do I'd rather have the Caterham for going mad and a quieter, bigger, smoother car for the times I just want to get somewhere in a relaxed fashion...

Well you have the answer.

Put the caterham on the track and keep the golf for the shopping run.

SORTED.

Keep it for a couple of years then sell it to me when I can afford the insurance for a 16v  ;D

I don't know if this helps but it's my contribution. I sold my 1 owner tornado red 5dr 1992 J 16v, 180,000 miles with FSH for ?1750 to a MAIN dealer. The body work was ok but the interior was truly excellent. If your car is any 'good', and I use that word in it's broadest sense since obviously no-one here can see your car, then yes ?1000 is too low. Why does everyone say oak green is the colour ? I spoke to 3 specialist dealers (not MAIN dealers) before selling mine and they all agreed Tornado red is the colour people want this car in. I'm NOT saying oak green isn't nice, it is, but I don't think it has the iconic status that people think it has ? - (not my opinion but that of three specialist dealers) however, each to his own taste and I wouldn't knock anyone's preference of colour - we're all individuals thank goodness.

As for my car ? It was so nice the dealer has kept it for himself and has not sold it on - he knew a good future investment when he saw one. regards, yt.

Tornado Red is great if you wax it all the time (and it doesn't fade)....  Otherwise metallics look better for longer generally. I'd say Royal Blue is rarer than Oak Green if not nicer. My car is what you might describe as a time warp car with both a fantastic interior, exterior and mechanical condition. How did you come to offer your car to a main dealer? as a px? I have set up pics on an online photo album. Send me your email if you'd like to see it.
