Title: help!
Post by: vaughn on 06 February 2008, 19:50
i`ve have got a mk5 gti as a courtesty car for the next couple of days and absolutely loved it(and more importantly so has the other half)
so she`s agreed we can get a mk5 gti
a couple of questions for you
if i went for a standard gti 5 door, what options would i be best to go for? for re-sale value and enjoyment value, i quite fancy the 18" alloys and winter pack, centre arm rest, and xenons
i could also push for the ed30 but no extras
and apart from the stealers where else could i order a new one from
hope you lot can help

Congratulations and a great choice

I'm not surprised you have been hooked after having one as a courtesy car ... you struck lucky there      .. some people struggle to get a decent test drive of a GTi out if their dealers, nevermind a few days courtesy car !!

With regards to optional extras - the two "no brainers" seem to be the centre armrest (£??) and Highline Computer (£50).  The rest is up to you, but don't expect to get your money back in resale value on any of them !   I would myself only go for the 18" Monzas, but I think I'm in the minority on that score, being a tight Yorkshireman

As well as the stealers,  you can get good value EU imports from a number of UK sources, and without having to wait months for your order.  However these imports are pre specced (and very often basic spec).   As an example you can currently get basic spec import ED 30's for around £20,000 for immediate delivery (maybe a good idea if you think the other half may may go cool on the idea   ).

I got mine from here :

http://www.allbrandsnew.com/search_results.asp?manufacturer=VOLKSWAGEN&model=GOLF+HATCHBACK+SPECIAL+EDS

(without the GuardX and extended warranty) and can recommend them !

I got my first GTi from here :

http://www.motorprovider.uk.com/golf_gti_stock.htm

Again, no problems and would certainly use either again.

However, UK dealers seem to be offering much bigger discounts on GTi's now (around 8% being reported on here) and the savings on imports are therefore not be as big as they used to be.

You will not got a 3rd year warranty with an import (unless purchased seperately), so you need to weigh this up also (a 3rd year warranty purchased from VW UK is around £450)

Let us know what you decide

I posted the same reply in another forum, so I'll just paste it here :-

"I also phoned a dealer and asked what the most popular options that people ask for 2nd hand wise, to get an idea on resale ability...
List went (in order he reckoned).
18" wheels
Satnav
Leather
Xenons "

Now obviously you won't make your money back, but they will make your car more desirable to the next buyer and make him more likely to choose yours over the next one.

What about DSG?

- You can get the satnav from e-bay for around £380-450 (this is where i got mine from)
- Centre armrest is a defo.
- Highline Comp is a defo
- 18" Monza II's (although you can get reps for a fraction of the price)

....Not in any order of importance:

- Centre Armrest - Easy to under estimate how usefully comfortable (rests elbow but still allowing 'quarter to three' steering wheel hands position).

- Monza 18's - Ride isn't harsh and looks much better.

- Highline Comp - A no-brainer!

- Reversing bleepers - Rear visibilty on Mk5's is very poor.

- Xenons - The difference between night and day!

- DSG - Especially for town and so much more than any 'automatic'. It's actually a new form of manual.

- 5-door - More practical.

How much of your money have I spent so far!?

Vaughn,

You knew you wouldn't resist for too long didn't you

As most have already said the important option above, I'd just like to finally welcome you to the MKV section  and see you later this year - most likely in your new motor

Oh, and this also means an extra moderator in the MKV section guys

My tips:

1. Save money by choosing a 'free' colour. Choose white if you want to confuse some dimwits that you are the police, or if you want to find your car easily in a carpark!

2. 18" wheels are a must, but they're a 1000 quid option on the GTI, so 'save' (  ) money by ordering an Edition 30, where they come as standard (pescaras not monzas, but very classy)

3. If you use the car in early starts during the winter, don't get the 'winter pack', but instead order the Edition 30, where heated seats come as standard! (Yet more savings...erm)

4. Xenons: an expensive option, but having now used them in anger in unlit country roads, the difference in visibility is so great that driving is simply less stressful, and you get other benefits like self levelling and the ability to adjust them for the continent without silly fiddly bits of sticker being slapped on the headlight plastic. I genuinely think these things add to the safety of the car, so surely that's a no brainer of an argument for getting girlfriend buy-in!

5. Multifunction Steering wheel: not necessary unless you need to use handsfree phone all day in the car. If you order DSG, you don't need this option to get the flappy paddles, as they come as standard.

6. DSG - the normal gearbox is great, but many of us have plumped for this DSG thingy and it makes a huge difference to the experience, but if you're looking for must-have options, I don't think not having DSG will result in your car being able to sell at a later date. It's worth having a go in one though - the dual clutches make for amazing gearchanges that you can either control yourself or leave it in auto mode.

7. Leather seats - Again, the Edition 30 saves you more money, as the seats are part leather, part cool GTI check, which looks better than full leather in my opinion, yet is included in the price rather than being an eye wateringly expensive extra (which the full leather is)

8. Many people chip their GTI. Save money by avoiding this step (for a bit at least) by getting an Edition 30, which is a bit nippier than the GTI in the first place but with a similar fuel economy.

In short, the edition 30 saves you money!

(erm )

thanks for all the replies folks it has been very helpful, my other half doesn`t want the dsg , but wants about every other option going.
also seen some specced up models at motorprovider, which have most of the options she wants at quite good prices so will have to go and shop round for a few weeks to see what deals we can get.
although an ed30 is quite appealing at the mo
she likes the 6th and 7th ones down

Cass

Hi Cass, thanks for putting me right - I think I must have talked the price of the option up in my head in order to justify the Edition 30...

It's not that cheap is it?

The cost of this car before VAT is £18561 on the official VW price list. (It has no optional extras), so it's basically selling for the as new price plus the on-the-road-costs, minus the VAT. (Not blaming them for pitching it at that price... but I can't imagine them being able to justify a higher one)
