Hi all i currently have the mf2 dvd satnav which is on e-bay now if anyone's interested (e-mail or pm me)
im upgrading to the RNS510 satnav and i want to put this ariel and antenna in instead of the gps ariel you get with the 510.
do i need another cable running from the satnav to the ariel point on the roof for the nav to pick up the satelites?
has anyone done this?or know what parts are required for this to work?
any help guys would be much appreciated

I dont understand, if you already have the MFD2, dont you already have the GPS aerial anyway?
When I installed my RNS 510, I just stuck the GPS aerial in the dash, by the centre vent.

Agree with 2007GTI - should be a straight swop from the factory MFD2 to the RNS510 - your existing shark fin antenna will work fine but you may need an aerial twin jack connector adaptor as in the below installation:

OT for which I apologise. How is the am reception with the shark fin?? I am looking to put this on my gti, purely for looks, but couldn't stand to loose radio 5 live!!!

I already have the bee sting ariel on my car,i want to know if its possible to change that ariel to the shark fin with bee sting,so i get radio reception and the sat nav from the one unit, rather than using the gps antenna in the dash.

Factory fit shark fin gives both radio and Sat Nav function. Aftermarket shark fin aerials may not give this functionality (probably radio only) so you would need to buy an OEM VW aerial (shark fin or newer combined bee sting which may be pricey. Don't know if it is a straight fit or whether you need any other kit with it. May be easier just to go with your existing bee sting for the radio reception and use the GPS aerial supplied with your RNS510 and put it in the dash under the central grille.
BTW - how come you don't have a sharks fin aerial with your MFD2 Sat Nav - was this an aftermarket install as well ?

Hi cass yes i want to buy the combined shark fin and bee sting but just wondered what i need to do this, the mfd2 was a retro fit so that has been done with the gps antenna under the dash under the central grille.

oh ok, got you, you would have to run a new cable to the roof for the GPS aerial, as there wouldn't be one there at the moment.
consider this, if you keep the bee string, it will prevent thieves automatically knowing you have GPS!

Thats a good point, but i would still like it i saw one of these ariels on an ED30 in the vw showroom and it looked good,i just need to know what parts i need to do this

ask the stealer!

You only need the new aerial arrangement and the gps lead, however you have to take all the headlining off in the cabin to run the cable and people often report a total loss of AM reeception after fitting it  Not to mention the hassle this creates with haing to refit the headlining etc. There are a few DIY's around if you search the usual forums.

The vw oem shark fin, old style, not whip aerial and base is part number 1k0 035 507 and approx £25 from the stealer I spoke to. http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3508 shows how to remove rear of headlinig

I put one of these on my car the day I got it! Unfortunately I get no AM reception at all - which really hacks me off... but I cant be bothered changing it back!

b@gger. might not bother with this, and just put the standard base on.
-
The one im speaking about is a new type of ariel it has the shark fin and the bee sting combined into one so you shouldn't lose any radio reception!!!

I have the Sat Nav in my car, not an after market fit, but I don't have the shark fin just a standard antena. What is the norm?

I have a 2007MY car and it came with the sharks fin aerial. The combined sharks fin/bee sting seems to be for the current year. Don't know why you have the standard bee sting, might be standard fit for Ireland :undecided:

RNS unit is new but dealers should still have the parts code for this. It is likely to be slightly different than the lead for the MFD2 as the Sat Nav unit connectors are different (need double adaptor when converting from MFD2 to RNS510). I see you have also posted on VWNavi - might get a better response from there

I have been to the dealers but they do not know, they took the chassis number off the ED30 in the showroom to get the part numbers i need which they gave me the two,so they have asked technical at there head office and they don't know, good old vw aren't they just great
