Title: MK4 Golfs
Post by: Michael Andaz on 05 February 2008, 22:11
Hello

I am interested in buying a MK4 golf as my second car.  However, I've been looking around for information on different models and can't really find anything.  Can anyone give me some information about different MK4 models or point me in the right direction please?

Thanks.

Hello welcome mate.
Now where to start, the 1.8 Turbo and the 150 TDi are the pick of the bunch but not by any means the cheapest. Depends what you want to spend.

The 1.4 is very under powered but ok for around town.
The 2.0 8v drink oil for a pass time and are only 115 bhp, not great as the mk4 is a heavy car.

Also depends what you want from it TBH. Thay can suffer from some common probs,
the windows dropping into the doors is very common tho most mk4 have had this issue sorted by vw as it was such a big prob. The 1.8T can suffer from faulty coilpacks.

Above all the mk4 is very smooth car to drive and normally very reliable.
Ive done  55000 miles in my 1.8t and its been as spot on.
HTH

Thanks

Do you think it's worth buying a Golf which has done 80,000 miles for example?

Will it still run smooth.

Soz i didnt read your post saying your after a 1.4  :embarassed:

1.4? I know that 80000 is nothing for the bigger engines like the 1.8 and 2.0 but im not to sure about the 1.4.
I dont know too much about them TBH tho thay are under powerd from the start so it will have had to pull around the heavy mk4  :undecided:

I had a 1.4 and i turned it into a 1.8t so i can tell you the difference. If im honest the 1.4 16v lump isnt actually that slow, whack a filter on it and it helps it out. Dont get the 1.4e like i got because its the most basic model, go for a 1.4s or se, they come with leccy windows, mirrors and a sunroof! Petrol on the 1.4's is good as well, if you drive sensibly you'l see about 350 miles from a full tank and even when raggin it is nothing compared to what is it like when i rag it now - overall good cars, especially for a 1st car. My 1.4 lump had 77k on the clock and still run like clockwork.

The only downside to the 1.4s are that the gearboxes are more fragile then a glass hammer and they are bucks to replace (£900) because they are like gold dust as they made 3 different types of boxes in the 1.4's and you have to have the right one!

Hope that helps!

I got a diesel pd engine and its great. Good mpg quick looks ace. But yeah like rich says. Dont go for box standard. You want the nice bits ie electric windows all over etc etc.

I test drove a 2.0 8v petrol before geting me diesel. Its ok but just in the long run i knew better mpg and cheaper insurance are needed.

Mine did 89 thousand miles when i got mine and its smooth.

Test drive a few mate see what you like.

Being 17 to poor lad is going to struggle to insure anything higher than 1.6 without being taken for a mug and get raped by the insurance companies.

Seriously unless you have driven one you wont know that the 1.4's are actually quite nippy. You would think that it would be slow to lug around the mk4 but its not actually that bad! (Look at me defending it now I got rid of that lump)

looking at the figures the 1.4 isn't that bad

i'd say go for the 1.6 16v is you can afford the difference group 6 instead of 4 but its comparable to the 2.0 8v GTI (which is group 10)

could also be worth looking into pass plus which will knock a fair chunk of your insurance
