Title: k&n air filter cleaning
Post by: richard s on 05 February 2008, 20:38: i need to clean my k&n filter i am thinking of giving it a soak in petrol but also need to use my car while it dries so was wondering if it would still run ok if i used a piece of cloth in place of my k&n for a day or two

Buy an OEM spec one from GSF for the meantime.
I'm not sure on prices but they're not too bad I don't think :smiley:
Around a fiver maybe?

Post by: richardhammond on 05 February 2008, 20:57: Dont use petrol!!! get a cleaning kit halfords do it from about Ã‚£12 it comes with cleaner and the oil. i cleaned mine shock it dry and then lightly used the hairdryer then re-oiled had it back on the car in a 1 hour!! once again dont use petrol! and remember to re-oil or you may as well not have a fillter!!!

Post by: Amo on 05 February 2008, 22:42: If you do not want to buy cleaning kit, use white spirit and clean it off with a clean 100% cotton cloth. White spirit should Dry in no time. However you will still require to spray the protective spray before you put it back on otherwise it will get dirty very easily.

the reason i was going to use petrol was i had a piper cleaning kit and when i used it it didnt remove any dirt (i did exactly what it said on the tin) so was not impressed with the results so instead of spending upto Ã‚£15 on a kit i personaly dont think will work i was going to spend Ã‚£3 on petrol as i thought that it would be kinder to the filter than paint thinners
the temporary usage of a piece of cloth would be to stop any dirt going into the open inlet ducting

i am not going to ram a cloth in the intake i was thinking along the lines of a lovingly shaped stretched and clamped piece
or do you have personal experience of bad clothitus
