Post by: Nuttybulldog on 04 February 2008, 19:04
Hi all

my brother has a mk2 golf 1.3 and wants to lower it. i said go the full wack and get 60mm but hes a bit worried about speed bumps and stuff like that.

so should he go for a 60mm or a 40mm drop and also what is the best kit for under £220?

I can highly recommend Eibach springs, they are great. Mine are -30 to 40mm which is a very good drop, low without being impractical. I wouldn't lower 60mm where I live cause the roads are very bumpy and lots of speedbumps - it'd be a nightmare.

Best to get new shocks too, Koni ones are awesome. But I don't think you'd get this setup for under £220, unless you can find a second hand one.

I could also recommend my koni -30 to 40mm springs, which are in the for sale section. Make me an offer hahaha!

defo 60mm on a 1.3, will look the nuts! and handle a lot better, dnt really see much point in 40mm, can barely see the difference..

40mm is the best handling set up.

60mm is better looking.

120mm is the way forward

my last mk2 was lowerd 60....and current mk2 is 40mm....id say 40mm handles better than 60mm did....but 60mm looks far better...so on that note go for 60mm drop or even 80mm....any lower than 80mm u will struggle to get over some speed bumps/drives etc

Get yourself set of springs from GSF, no point spending too much on 1.3. These springs can lower your call upto 60mm and as long as u have 15" or higher size alloys you will be ok for speedbumps just need to be a lil slow and cautious on really high bumps. These springs around around £60 inc VAT and fitting should be around £80. You might want to check your shocks though cos if they are worn then it might works out a lil more.

hope this helps

60 mil or 80 mil will just f**k your car imo only for looks doesnt help handling unless you have coilovers, or a 40 mil drop is sufficient,

sorry forgot to say that my 60mm is on adjustable coilovers that probs why the handling is better then 40mm..id still go 60mm anyday, coilovers or not..

iom the only time 60mm doesnt do you any favours is in the wet, but then again you'd be a dumbass to drive fast round a corner in the wet...ce la vi!

Dont lower your car if you plan on having 3 people in the back!

My car isnt lowered and when i stopped to get petrol last night i was looking at my car (as ya do :embarassed: ) and noticed that it was mega low  looked good but would have been nice if it was meant to be like that!

Im fairly sure that if my car was lowered that it would have been scrubbing like a b!tch!

haha no offence? Mate im in a 17 year old car with 17 year old suspension, of course i wont take offence! I know how crap it is. I did think that other suspension would be the same though so i learnt something!

Just decided that soon as i can im going to get coilovers, wether its this car or another one!

mate got -80mm jamex's on koni adjustables and the thing looks the mutz nutz and handles like a demon. Got 14"RA's on it doesn't scrub with 5 up

Its a big bumnper model though so the bumper at the front is super low, some speed bumps i just can't do. Small sacrifice in my opinion.

Go 60mm if you want to be conservative about things.

60mm is the point where speed bumps become a problem and the ride becomes harsh. You decide what's practical, but personally for daily driving 40's low enough for me, also with my wheels without cutting the arches out completely I haven't a choice. Handling wise, it really doesn't make a massive difference - some people equate a firm ride to better handling which isn't the case. Suspension geometry wise the lower wishbones are level with a 40mm drop, thoeretically good, but the lower you go the further out of design spec you are going, not that it makes any real difference on the road.

yeh it deffo depends on what you want. i went straight to 60mm but i think i might go up a bit and see how the car handles..will post back!

If you're looking at spending up to £220 surely it makes more sense to buy some coilovers - then you can set the ride height as you like :)
