Title: New disks and pad advice (going to the ring so need to be good!)
Post by: Andy Jeffries on 04 February 2008, 13:12
Okies...taking the mk2 to germany soon and want to improve the brakes a bit..what are these like?

Dont mind spending more - if im thinking right the rears dont do much so may change them with new oe spec stuff and go better on the fronts?

Cheers all

Some of the guys that do a lot of track action don't rate drilled discs as they can crack - they just go for decent grooved ones. Plus the ebay ad doesn't mention the brand which makes me suspicious - they might just "look" the part.

I've got grooved brembos on mine and they are good (if a bit noisy), plus they are available from GSF for under £30.

Brembo Max from GSF good discs and last well and then some Fast road pagid pads or Green stuff EBC I would say :) the red stuff ones can be a bit of a pain for road driving until they warm up

why not bite the bullet and do what im doing. upgrade to 280mm discs.

mk2 16v hubs, caplipers and carriers off a vr6, g60 or audi sport, then the g60 discs... bolt it all up, much betetr pads for the track, and not too expensive.

that coupled with decent pads, some braided hoselines, a 22mm master cylinder and some decent fluid, and your away! or stopping shouuld i say.

the bigger discs will cope with the racing heat generated from braking, will disperse is quicker, hence increasing max braking performance longer and increasing time until fade occurs.

theres some g60's on ebay now. i got an 8v and changed to 16v 256. the difference was noticable but nowhere near as noticeable as when i changed to g60's.  amazing power especially when braking from high speeds. got mine all in for under £150

g60 carriers/calipers
brembo plain diskd
pagid f/r pads

go to gsf for pads and disks, and sign up to edition38 and claim your discount!

those ebay jobs look nasty. just get plain disks.what do grooved disks mean?  less surface contact, less braking power.

just clean your rears up and re grease the bearings

got mine for under 100 too. eactly the same se-tup as above!

like said, service the rear calipers, new pads etc and discs (qulity ones though)

oh yeah, paint the calipers red, will improve performance by at least 10%. i have, and it really is noticable.

grooved just means your brakes will dissepate heat faster, look like grooved discs and warp after hard use, unless you pay ridiculous amounts.

Exactly what I'm running on the front at the moment with just OE on the back :)

The grooves and drilled holes are there to remove the gas that overheating pads give off, which is part of what causes brake fade.  By over-specifying your brakes (i.e. 280mm) you shouldn't have overheating brakes, so you shouldn't need cut and holed discs.

As others have said, just fit 280s - mine have hauled me down on two track days already without breaking sweat.  That's VW pads and Zimmerman discs, which have the nice vent holes in the centre of the rotor, all the better to aid disc cooling and also prevent heat transfer into the hub, which would be bad.

Fresh brake fluid will also be good.  Go to super-racing spec if you want, or just flush your system regularly with good quality fluid - it's all about keeping the moisture out of the fluid so it doesn't boil - fresh fluid = less moisture = less likely to boil = longer consistenly good braking.

Also worth noting is that by losing weight you will improve your braking performance - less weight in the car = less weight to stop = less heat in the stoppers.  I've ditched over 100kg of weight out of my G2 and it stops and goes so much quicker - it is definitely the best and cheapest mod I've made to it (until this winter).

I spent a fortune once on zimmerman discs and green stuff pads on my old 8 valve. Result, still poo, until warmed up which never happened on the daily commute. When thrashing around then yes probably a difference.(placebo effect)
It wasn't till i got my 16 valve that i really noticed the difference. Hey presto! breaks that work. I have total confidence in my brakes and have been running a set up of standard discs with pagid pads for nearly a year now and let me tell you they fookin stop when you want them to brother. Oh yes!
With regards to said German Ring, i'd save me money on fancy pads ' n ' discs and just go standard 16v with pagid pads. You really cant go wrong, seriously.
