Title: Am I doing something wrong..... Please Help UPDATED.........
Post by: ben_n_katie on 03 February 2008, 21:04
Iv just got my Golf GTi 1.8 Turbo and when I got in her this morning to go to work It had no go. I had my foot almost flat to the floor and she was only going approx 5 mph and then when she finally decided to go she was jumping like a kangaroo. My partner thinks its me but Im possitive its not. It only seems to do it when she is cold.

I have no idea about VW's and would like some advice please

Could have an engine managment problem,  In other words a sensor...   Not to clued up on the fuel system on these engines so i cant say much more.

mk4s seem to have issues with various sensors so I'll move this to the mk4 section, see if anyone can answer this in there.

You really need to get it on vag-com (or similar) to check for any fault codes, as mentioned this engine is heavily governed by electronics and various sensors which can cause all sorts of problems.  Vag-com interogates the engine management systems and reports any problems found.

I don't suppose you know which particular type of engine you have?  It will be on a sticker under the boot carpet, eg AUM, AUQ etc  There have been a number of 1.8T engines, some of them drive by wire which is an electronic throttle.  If you have your foot on the brake and the accelerator at the same time it will limit the revs to about 3000 rpm but at that engine speed you should be doing more than 5 mph!!  I'm just mentioning this as an outside possibility.

Does the engine rev ok?  what kind of engine speed are you getting at 5 mph?  It could be that your brakes arn't releasing properly after sitting for a while and this is holding you back.

As said plug it into vagcom. Get your boyfriend to drive it so he knows its not you!

does sound like the MAF sensor which is located on the inlet pipe just after the air filter housing

i had this problem only 2 days ago and it was to do with the piston head and coil timing but best bet is to take it to the garage pay the diognostic fee's and know for sure.

Sorry to say but she's right!
I laughed, grabbed the keys and said she must be doing something wrong. I jumped in started her up not a problem...

Reversed out of parking space, in 1st AND nothing!

Foot to floor with no effect on revs...Just sits slightly higher due to being cold... When foot is on floor just drops around the correct idle position...

No pick up all. When she does start to pull forward its SLOW! very slow then jumps slightly...

I have checked spark plugs and it does seem to be moist in number one. In the chamber above the spark plug..where the lead goes in on top of plug.

Also noticed that the cam belt was every so slightly wonky and as i check to se there was any slack I was able to push it about 1 - 2 mm on the cam pulley. In the head direction..  But it couldnt be timing as its fine about 30 m down road...

So im thinking moisture as its much worse in morning. Not so bad if you leave to cool for 2, 3, 4 hours..

???? ????

I would have thought moisture with the plugs would give you trouble starting and a rough idle - but it seems as if this is OK?  It could be moisture related with the Throttle Body, the electronic one is drive by wire and it kinda sounds like the throttle isn't getting your request for more power!  Assuming you have the DBW model.....

Do your brake lights work ok?  A faulty foot brake sensor has been known to cause weird problems with throttle control.

Its all speculation really until you get it on Vag-com....

This Vag-Com is it a diagnostic computer??? If so I can get it checked for free. Its not just VW job?

If we start the car up and leave it for 1 - 6 mins just so its started to warm up its fine...

Im starting to hate cars I got enough trouble rebuilding my engine on my Mr2 Turbo..

Cheers, if anyone else has any more ideas let us know..

vag com is the software that talks to the car, its third party but can do pretty much everything VW can do.

i think most places charge about £40 for a diagnostic, but there is probably someone near you that has it.

maybe your car just hates you for abusing her before she's had a chance to warm up, ragging a car from cold is only going to end one way and thats a fooked up engine.

isn't there something about the VVT not kicking in until the engine is warm?

We only had her a couple of weeks.

Im very experienced with driving tubby's... I've told the missus to drive gently until car is warmed up and cool down etc etc.

I think the VVT warming up hasnt got anything to do with it...It wont even struggle to drive!

Im going to try and get it check on Vag-Com by my friend at the garage he works at...

Ill let you all know what, if anything, it brings up..

!!!!!!!!UPDATED!!!!!!!!:

Well she has been in for a full service on the 8th on the 11th the problem had got worse (Cold Start Only)..... So back we went to VW plugged it in and said there was a air flow problem. Left it there all day and they came back with the air mass metre. They changed it and it seemed to run fine again. Until i started it up this morning and yet again the bloody problem is back ahhhhhh. So off we went to VW AGAIN now they want it in for a few days (this aint gonna be cheap)

It makes me laugh, they wanted to charge us £170 for part and labour for the air flow metre. But when we said we would go elsewhere it suddenly dropped to £120 lol. We persisted and said no so they wanted to charge us £35 just for looking at the car.
Me being me said no hang on you said it could be a problem which they had caused and we managed to get the air mass metre done for just £75 and few pennys. They dropped all labour charges. Just goes to show how much they shove ontop of parts.

Bet they will sting us now car had to go back in. But I will persist and get it cheaper as they missed diagnosed it the first time round.

Sorry for going on. just thought id give you a update
