Title: Powersteering conversion hit a problem help.........
Post by: Diluxe on 03 February 2008, 09:14
right I started doing a ABF conversion on non power assisted 16v, I got a mk3 16v took the subframe, power steering, engine & gearbox, so  attaching the subframe lastnight & I noticed that the UJ i took of the mk3 is nothing like the design of the mk2.

If you have a look at this pic , parts 3,5,7 are all one peice on my mk2, I took the lower UJ (3) of the mk3 but foolishly didnt take the upper (7), could anyone confirm that all i need is the upper & that this will connect upto my original steering column.

right after abit of investigation i have significantly more splines on my mk2 UJ than on the MK3 therefore getting the upper UJ from a MK3 will not allow me to link up the MK3 rack to my steering column, has anybody got round this?

is it safe for me to cut up the mk2 UJ & make it basically into the MK3 setup of two peice,  inthe pic below the black UJ is MK2 one peice & the bottom is the mk3  lower

As long as you've something like a bolt going through it to stop it rotating I would definitely say so.

well ive recently fitted a seat toledo PAS rack(which seemed to be more mk3 platformed than mk2), and the steering gear had less splines than my original mk2 one, so i used the UV joint as well which matched up to the steering column. its possible this could work for you too. worth checking out before bodging one together

Ok so the toledo pas was made up of two UJ (one upper & one lower) and your upper UJ had more splines than the lower ? you couldnt tell me what year of toledo, model etc ?
