my recon box has started to rattle in neutral it goes when i press the clutch pedal! my mate had a recon box in his, his is newer than mine....... but its strange that both boxes have started to rattle >:(
i take it that its the imput shaft bearing which are rattling!
is there any oil which will quieten this down!
ive changed the oil in it a few times!
-
you mean the thrust bearing?
i take it, it doesnt rattle when the car is stationary and you put the clutch down?
my thrust bearing has been whining ever since the day i bought it 2 years ago, just have never got round to changing it
changing the oils might quieten it down, try some Redline MTF in there

Could be the clutch release bearing ???
-
same thing ;)
-
Could be the clutch release bearing or the gearbox input shaft bearing(which is different).
-
Might well only be the clutch release bearing which can be replaced without removing the gearbox.
-
Is it possible to remove bearing with box in situ ??
-
Its not likely to be the release bearing as that would do it more when you push your foot on the clutch as your pushing the bearing against the release plate and also it would show up in every gear.
If it only does it in neutral I would say it is an input shaft bearing.
Push your foot on the clutch, does it still make the noise with gearbox disengaged?

i tried some wynns gearbox stop leak as there is oil under the box!!!!
anyway this stuff is like thick oil and is ment to do the same as the maxlife oil revitalise seals etc...........
and it also said it queitens noise and it did seem queiter!

??????
No oil in the box ?
Steve.

what i mean is there is gear oil on the underside of the gearbox its seeping out some where! not enough to worry if theres any oil in there.... as the box was still full of oil! it just makes a mess!

What you need to check if there is oil under the box is where it is coming from. It might be the driveshaft oil seals or it could be from the case itself.
I had a leak on mine and hoped it was the seals but it turned out to be the case was cracked as a result of the diff pin rivets coming adrift, a known fault on the 020 box. when it does go it normally shows up as a whine on 5th gear as this sits higher up then the rest of the gears in the box so gets starved of oil first.
Get under the car and have a look at the dif housing on the box. It has ribs in it for strength, go round with your fingers and see if you can feel any small cracks.
hopefully it will be just the seals but it would be good to check.

it is a recon so i think its just the seals......
