What a barsteward it was to do. I couldnt be arsed to re-solder the connections so i just bought another one. As it happens the one that was in there is from a passat. anyway, got home with me new part - Ã‚£81+VAT from the steeler. had a prat on because someone had been in there before and not put things back properly. Mainly the metal ring that turns round to release the clamp on the door handle.

Anyway, lots of swearing later i now have a fully functional central locking system so many thanks for the tips and the dissassembly guide.
