I've used gaffa tape for now, but if I was going to do it properly with new membranes I would look for some kind of mild spray adhesive I guess.

duck/gaffa tape worls a treat.

I run a strip of tape around the edges. Then stick the membrane to this strip with more tape!!!

you need to clean the metalwork, i used paraffin, to get all the dirt off. i used a whole tape of waterproof duck tape per door! and a thick bin bad.it works!

the ribbon sealer looks to me like the black "blu tak" like stuff that autoglass etc use when fitting widscreens. it is very sticky and would be ideal!

Had a ratch about and I can't find it anywhere in the UK. I got my last roll from a mate who works for autoglass. I used it to stick my VDO guages into my dash, It is rock solid but can be removed without trace if I need to!

I stuck mine down with duct tape all round it, but as said already, you need to clean the painwork first. I think I used white spirit to clean mine, it says this in the matey matey guide.

What I did was have two layers on my 5dr Golf. First I added one as shown below:

Next I bought a roll of sticky back membrane from a place called Hex Holdings. The membrane looks like it's made from a thin white foam, but once stuck on stopped my leak completely.

I had previous tried a plastic membrane with just one layer and sealed with Tiger Seal but that let water in.

I went overkill on mine, I did the same as the pic above, plus I also did the holes to the top left and right to start with, then I got the old membrane and stuck it to a new membrane so it was double thick and then duct taped it all to the door.

Just used UHU or something like that if I remember rightly. The most important thing is to make sure its all clean first imo. White spirit did the trick for me.

The other thing that really works is if you duct tape the inside of the holes up to about halfway, that way you've tape on tape so it sticks better, and when water gets to the lower lip there's a flashing rather than relying on just the sticking power of the tape. Lay it from top to bottom (and bottom to top for the inside layer) so you get a roof-slate effect.

Blaze im gonna steal your pic if you dont mind, I always need one when im trying to explain this to peeps but ive not found one till now

In addition to what everyone has said, look closely along the bottom of the door in blaze's pic.  See the 2 small holes? (not the lower ones for the door card clips)  Make sure you DONT block those when you fit your membrain, if you doo, water cant drain and sits at the bottom, no matter how well you seal it if that happens it will seep through eventually!

The 2nd sheet stuck to the bottom of the door trick works well to prevent this from even happening though, as any water that gets in is deflected off that sheet and never ends up in the bottom of the outer sheet.

Edit: I've always used waterproof duck tape, never had any leaks.  Done it on 4 cars so far :)

ducktape, cleaned paintwork with petrol and heated up surface & tape with hairdryer. In this weather the tape/ metalwork is too cold to adhere properly, so heat it up first to activate the glue.

Sure rubjonny, use my picture. You suggested the whole idea to me in the first place anyway.

Sorry to be a bore, but only use petrol to run your car with! NEVER use it as a cleaning agent, its far too volatile, one static spark, and its game over, parafin, or white spirit are more suitable, but not ideal...
