Hi guys,
I've just bought a K&N air filter for my GTI but can't for the life of me work out how to install it.
Do I need to take the engine cover off? I presume I do because I cannot see an air box anywhere whilst it's on. Of course, the other option may be that the box is a different shape to the filter I have (the K&N 33-2888) and I've got the wrong one.
Any help, greatly appreciated.

The 'engine cover' IS the box for the air filter and can only take flat panel filters. ITG are reckoned to be the best filters.
The cover is a pain in the arse to open but there are 'how-to's' with step by step pics on the net.

RedRobin, I note that replacement ITG panel filters are in the region of 60 quid! What are the advantages of using this rather than a standard paper panel? Are there any noticeable improvement............power, engine sound?

....I'd have to conduct quite scientific tests to tell you what any improvements are, and you know what the placebo effects are! :grin:
My Carbonio intake came with a PiperCross panel filter and someone I know with a Mk5 GTI, who is a highly qualified engineer and whose opinion I respect, told me ITG were the best. The ITG filter is certainly of very robust multilayered construction and fits the 'box' very tightly, so sealing is good - Better quality than the PiperCross which in turn is much better than the standard 'paper' panel. Extremely low maintenance was also a factor in my decision - No additional oiling is ever needed and just an occasional dust off. Also a lifetime warranty.
Don't forget that the VW standard filter gets thrown away and replaced every ?,000 miles when servicing - What does that tell you?
The ITG Pro-filter utilizes the same three layer reticulated polyester foam used on the MAXOGEN air filters. Unlike some of the competition, ITG filters have a massive dust load-up tolerance, which is the ability to absorb a large amount of dust without reducing air flow capacity. With the standard K03 turbo I wouldn't like to say that any performance gains are appreciable without proper scientific testing. However, the manufacturers claim about +2 bhp is possible.
It's also MAF-friendly! And probably more benefit to a remapped car.
If you plan on keeping your car, as I do, then it'll quickly pay for itself by not needing to replace it - 60 squid well spent imo.

Good as the ITG filter is, it doesn't necessarily make sense to invest such money if someone isn't planning to keep their car for a while, and/or if their car isn't remapped.
I view it as being preventative maintenance with only a miniscule performance gain, but it all adds up to a nice package. If you want more gains from an air filter then remove the stock engine cover completely and go for an aftermarket low mounted Cold Air intake with an air bypass valve to keep out any water.

I ran an ITG flat filter on my 172 and then 182, I then had an ITG Maxogen on my VX220.
So I shall be looking for the ITG filter on the ED30 when it arrives.
This Carbonio intake jobby... any good? What does it replace? Whats the benefit? I've used a CAI before on my S2000, is it a similar idea?

....It simply replaces the stock ram intake in the upper grill. It's a good way of improving the air flow without risking your warranty by removing the engine cover filter box. There's constant debate whether the Carbonio is worth it and its detractors always claim it's just carbon eye-candy, but combined with a good filter and a remap and exhaust, it will improve torque and throttle response but don't expect much bhp gain. It's far more efficient and bigger than the standard complicated ram.
