my car was running fine, pulled up went to leave and it wudnt engage first or second, only 3rd and fourth.

i had a mess with the gear linkage, i could then get first and second but no 3rd or fourth?

would it be the bushes inthe gear linkage next to the engine, what are the alignments etc

You might have a hairline crack on the ends of the gear linkages, GSF sell them cheap enough.

The gear stick ball housing may also have worn down a bit.

Check Rubjonnys How To. http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=33100.0

The relay shaft bush may also have worn out worn enough to effect gear selection. mk2mark sells a modified one which slips over the white plastic centre of the original one. http://www.iol.ie/~locoblade/bushes.html

I replaced the bushings in the linkage as I was having the same problem. The bushings had worn to all but nothing. I'd check the bushings since they help keep thing alligned.Have fun it's a rather simple job and one can use a casset tape in place of the expensive tool to get the things in the right places when adjusting the shifter.
