hello mk4 owners... please be kind to me.
been offered a 20v engine for my mk2, tis the non turbo engine, obviously its going to be alot faster than my 8v mk2, especially with cosworth engine management.
but, it needs the bottom end replacing as its knocking, but robiwill who i mite be getting it from has a spare he'll throw in, so, just an idea, but what will i need in order to swap the b/e, along with a rough idea of cost to swap it?
anyone had any problemos with the non turbo 20v?
muchos gratias,
rob

Soz I cant help but,
get the turbo and dont tell Martin ;)

Yeah its not a turbo

As said, why dont you bide your time and get a tubby lump.
Save changing the engine twice.

They're pretty bullet-proof and produce 125bhp stock. 140 ish with a de-cat and decent mapping.
Since most of the important stuff is bolted to the head, you'll probably just need a head gasket kit from VW which isn't expensive and even includes new head bolts. It's half a days work for a competent mechanic so the rates won't be stupid if you decide not to attack it yourself. (If you ask Robin nicely he might even arrange for his business partner Steve to do the swap for you)
Now get out of my section before we taunt you.

hahaha, im 21, i have no no-claims, and i cant afford the turbo version at the moment. he's offering me a mk2 with the full install already done, just needs the b/e sorting out, then he said its turning over but not firing, so get that sorted, and hopefully i'll be away. that way i have the full set up ready to drop a 20vt in when i can afford to without having to pay ridiculous install prices from a garage.
oh yeah, and he only wants 500 for the lot.
surly thats worth it!
*hides from topher*

id grab it, then when your ready sell the n/a lump and whack a tubby lump in!
-
or you could keep you 500 notes and save for a year then got straight for the tubby.
-
well i have the cash in my wallet now waiting to get it, if he isnt willing to have it sorted out down in cambridge then me pick it up, im gonna have to gat it trailered up here and have it sorted out, not too fussed about having it running anytime soon tbh, cos i'll probs wait til after my insurance re-newal comes in... and im 21, then i'll have a years no-claims and hopefully 21 will make a difference...

stick the £500 in a savings account and buy the turbo lump next year; you'll fit the non turbo and only wished you fitted the turbo engine
no point doing half a job IMO
-
yeah but in my defense, not seen a turbo lump alone go for less than a grand, so think this will keep me entertained til i do get a turbo when my insurance will permit, and i need a new engine either way cos mine is dead, so either a 1.8 gigi or a 20v mk4 one... and a decent mk2 digi goes for around 400 notes, so 500 notes for a decent engine and a car with alarm and what not is a bargain in my eyes...
-
ah didn't realise you needed a new engine that badly lol
but you need to shop around; someone won a 1.8T from a Curpa complete with gearbox for around £800 from Ebay the other week
-
for the power you'll get from that AGN lump, you'd be better off finding an ABF from a mk3 16v or cordoba etc. same price, same if not more power and a piece of p!ss to fit and set up since it's digi.
-
yeah but like i say, this is already fitted, just needs a bit of attention and hopefully its good for 140 bhp. i dont want a turbo like i say, too much power at the moment and not enough money for insurance, but this leaves a window open for future when i do upgrade to 20vt.
but i've been looking at a mk3 valver, but 200 - 300 quid for a decent engine, and 200 - 300 for fitting and a lot of messing about.
this is pretty much all done for me.
see what i think... but like i say, just wanted to know of any common problems if any?
